“We read Sudhindranath Datta’s poetry, analysed the verse scheme. He prefaced one of his notes to me by quoting from Yeats’s When You Are Old & regarded Brecht’s A Worker Reads History as his favourite.” Subhoranjan Dasgupta’s tribute to #SumitSarkar

#SumitSarkar (1939-2026) and the Deepening of Indian Democracy: Sumit Sarkar’s life as a historian and public intellectual was defined by a persistent scrutiny of power—whether exercised by the Right, the Left, the state or institutions of knowledge, writes Shaan Kashyap.

To Sir - with love & respect
I still remember the first time when #SumitSarkar sir walked into our MA class in DU and scribbled on the board “ The making of the Indian Nation “ and then began one of the most engaging, participatory discussions on modern Indian History.
He was a whiff of fresh air and he brought out the best in us and engaged us and inspired us to do our part in this journey.
Fondly remembering those well spent days. Your books and teachings will always live on🙏🏼
There is no other scholar, no other historian, who can match the breadth, sweep and intensity of Sarkar. He achieved all this while keeping his own presence barely noticeable in either his books or his lectures

We were taught by Sipra Sarkar, #SumitSarkar's sister. Many of us chose JU over Presidency because of her. A family of brilliant historians, the original was, of course, Sushobhan Sarkar, their father, whose book became the recommended reading on Bengal Renaissance. The Sarkars were influenced by Marxist ideas, especially Trotsky and Gramsci. Sarkar Sr also wrote the manifesto of the CPI. Jyoti Basu used to call her by her pet name, Kajla.
In university there are no text books but recommended readings. But Prof Sumit Sarkar’s Modern India: 1885 to 1947 was almost like a text book while doing history honours at Delhi University. And was taught by Prof Tanika Sarkar at St Stephen’s college. Never taught by him but how I used that book! May the great professor rest in peace!

Scholars have unique and subtle ways of touching/shaping our hearts and minds. Nothing and no one can better that. Prof #SumitSarkar was one such gem. Glad to have met him and benefitted from his works. His legacy will live on through his works and countless readers/admirers.
My well thumbed, constantly read, constantly referred to copy of “Modern India,” by Sumit Sarkar. Prof Sarkar shaped the historical outlook of generations like me, guided us along the path of seeking the complex truth away from official myths. Adieu and godspeed Professor Sarkar.

#SumitSarkar 🙏💐
Professor Sumit Sarkar was that rara avis, an outstanding scholar who was also a very fine human being. Though I was never his student, my understanding of Indian history was deeply shaped by his books “The Swadeshi Movement in Bengal”, “Writing Social History”, and especially “Modern India: 1885-1947”. Then there are his brilliant Deuskar lectures, “Popular Movements and Middle-Class Leadership in Late Colonial India”, reprinted by Permanent Black in their edition of his “Uncollected Writings”. His work influenced generations of historians both in India and overseas, and will live on long after his passing.
Historian #SumitSarkar died at his Delhi residence on Thursday after age-related ailments, historian and family friend G Arunima told PTI. He was 87. Sarkar was widely regarded as an important voice in modern Indian history, with works such as The Swadeshi Movement in Bengal, Modern India: 1885-1947 and Writing Social History.
