This is alarming! But the government is sleeping, only busy in band-aid measures, like, water sprinklers. The groundwater is contaminated as well. Food is adulterated too. There is absolutely no tightening of enforcement and compliance measures. Anti-corruption agencies are busy in political witch-hunting. As a result, corruption has reached mammoth levels, and the repercussions are being felt now through such news. This is a multi-front battle and the government simply lacks the political will and a visionary leadership to tackle the problem. Citizens have to fend for themselves. Several regular folks I speak to have made terms with the fact that they will die sooner, and so will their children. And that death will not be in peace, but battling horrific diseases like cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular ailments, heart attacks, etc. The government has to WAKE UP to this reality and create stricter policy, and more importantly, ensure its enforcement and compliance. Many cities are dying. The "smart city project" has been shelved, and hence the talk about modernisation of cities too. We need to rethink and remake our cities. But none are interested? Bare minimum *maintenance* seems like a huge task for the governments.
Much of this is only doable by cracking down on corruption. In many ways, India is back to 2012 when corruption protests dominated headlines. The situation has only worsened after 13 years. Many of us are 'ram bharose'. And those who are resourceful are leaving the country. There is a limit to how much you can push citizens to the edge.

I highlighted that Countries can tackle #marinepollution through a combination of regulatory, #economic, #technological, and community-based measures. First they have to strengthen legislation on #SUPs, #microplastics and other pollutants, enforcing penalties to help ensure compliance. To ensure data availability countries need to strengthen national statistical systems, invest in monitoring #infrastructure, and standardize data collection methods.
