Fat Mulberry Guest Farm were handing out ice-creams just before finish. However, they missed a trick – should have had their stand at the bottom of the big hill with the slogan, “5km of Climbing ahead. Don’t have a meltdown, have an ice-cream instead!”.

Running fast has its hazards – you don’t want to end up as a “son of the soil” or with “Captain Kirk” pants*. Although I was incident free during Surrender Hill, I have boldly gone off-road where (hopefully) no man has gone before on many occasions.

The new out-and-back #SurrenderHillMarathon route from Fouriesburg is one of the toughest in the country but it’s significantly easier (+/- 200m less vert) than the old route from Clarens. Everything is run over a mile above sea level and the high point just scrapes 1900m.

The view from the top of Surrender Hill. I should have left the clip rolling slightly long, at the end Sabata Matshedisho spotted a ripe peach in the tree at the side of the road and harvested it.

I asked “Why didn’t the chicken run the marathon?” He told me, “To keep an eye on the ladies.”
Told him I’d be back in 4 hours to see whether he could come up with a funnier answer.On way back I found him on other side of road but forgot to ask him “Why?”

Every #SurrenderHillMarathon table had boerie. I initially declined the offer, got 100m down road & turned back to grab a piece.
Would be wrong not to sample some authentic boer braaied boerewors in Free State. I avoided jalapeno wors & went for spekboom varietal = very tasty.
It doesn’t get much more Free State than mielies growing in foreground with a koppie in background.
Not many people know this but these distinctive rock formations are known as koppies because they're formed via erosion caused by strong ‘headwinds’… 😉

302nd Marathon & 2nd #SurrenderHill. First time on new route from #Fouriesburg, same spectacular scenery. Still my #1 “must do” marathon in Free State. Well done to Hettie and the Bethlehem Marathon Klub team for a fantastic event!

The #SurrenderHillMarathon is run close to Lesotho border. Andrew ran in traditional Basotho outfit incl. a Mokorotlo hat. The hat is also known as "modianyewe" (he who executes judgement in court) as it's used to cast rulings in customary courts (like a gavel).

I ran much of the first half of #SurrenderHillMarathon with the Hopane brothers - Jackson & Hops. Hops is the younger, faster brother and we ran the home stretch together. After finishing with Hops I went looking for barley and yeast to mix with my water🍻.
