#OTD 1939 #SuttonHoo: Basil Brown writes '#War breaks out. At work in preparation for filling in #ship with bracken (after lining ship with as much hessian as I have available).' This would be Brown's last tasks on the site. The excavation was finally over. #SuttonHoo80
The official photo documentation of the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo was all but destroyed in the war. It’s because of these two holidaying schoolteachers that we have a wealth of photos of the ship’s imprint (also destroyed during the war). #SuttonHoo80
