The Greens are searching for their second leader in just over a year after Larissa Waters shocked Canberra and quit to focus on her battle with kidney disease. The Greens have struggled for relevancy amid the rise of One Nation as the main vehicle for protest voters, as well as the loss of three lower house MPs – including Senator Waters’ predecessor Adam Bandt – in Anthony Albanese’s 2025 Labor election landslide. Now Senator Waters has dealt a new blow, telling the party it must choose a new leader this week. Possible candidates to succeed her include NSW senator and anti-Israel protest regular Mehreen Faruqi, South Australian senator Sarah Hanson-Young and Tasmania’s Nick McKim. Senator Waters will be the first Greens parliamentary leader never to take her party to an election.
