Okay, I promised some more detailed analysis, so let's start here #SWEWNT #FIFAWWC #DENSWE #SWEITA
1) does anyone in the staff do some basic research? Literally 10 seconds before the first goal (ball still n the opposite wing) I screamed 'watch out for Oliviero'. Why? Because I saw her do the exact same move dozens of times while playing for Lazio. Did anyone do the homework or did the players deliberately ignore the instructions they got?
2) in fact both Lazio players looked like they were not scouted enough, since EO & MP were free to play their most beneficial soccer completely unchallenged for 60+ minutes. However, for the most part we failed to find a solution for Italy's most classic team moves. During Soncin's tenure #ITAWNT became a team that exploits the potential of their wing backs (after switching to the 3-back line), they heavily rely on the co-operation between full backs and forwards as well as on brief changes between playern of the same formation (both defense and front duo). Weren't we aware of this? Di Guglielmo and Cantore had so much time and space that esp in the latter stages of the first half it looked like a playground. We literally found no answer to sth that should have been completely expected.
3) okay, we had no clue what to expect from Italy, but why on Earth are we leaving our left side completely open (only 'welcome' sign was missing, but the Washington Spirit duo didn't care) and why were our players marking one another in the penalty box? Not to mention basic positioning errors - at the same time we were all over the place and completely out of place. Numbers were there (physically), but Italy (and Denmark a few days earler) could still do exactly what they wanted with very little effort.
4) team selection. Now, every head coach has the right to do it their own way, which I always respect. Therefore, I am not going to complain over f.ex. Nova Selin not being a part of the squad. However a few issues need to be brought up. Why were certain players used in a role they felt not really comfortable with? Why did it take so long to apply some much-needed tactical changes when we were getting completely outplayed and demolished? Why don't we loo for other solutions in defense when the ones we currently use keep failing every single test. Yes, Bella Andersson had a perfect NT debut, but from then things were constantly worse (the partnership with Nelhage also lacked confidence and the CB duo were responsible for quite a few mishaps during the April window).
5) why can't we benefit from what our players do for their clubs? I mean, we're ignoring Anvegård, then send her an emergency call-up only to give her four minutes of playing time, in a completely different role (yes, she's an all-around player, but be real) and with Schröder already on the bench. Also, we bring Evelyn Ijeh from North Carolina and make her sit on the bench for two games, despite her being in great scoring form. I did not see the trainings, but what I saw was a chance to re-create what coach Lind actually does (with success) for NC Courage. Ijeh on top, in a very familiar role, with Schröder (or Blackstenius or Kafaji or even Rolfö) imitating Matsukubo, Holmberg being our Ryan Williams etc. Of course, it is only one of many solutions, but at least it is a solution and for quite a long time we did not see any.
Yes, the first play-off round will be easily won even w/o any coaching staff (yes, I'm not being politically correct, but it is how it is), but we're well past the point when teams ranked somewhere between #20-#30 in the world arrived in Sthlm/Gbg only to concede a few goals and go back. We've just played a double-header vs Serbia and we all remember that especially in the away game, Serbs could've been two or three goals up if they were more clinical. Yes, both sides had their chances, but it also confirms that such a tie can easily go both ways and you can't allow to approach it not well-prepared for the task.
This said, I am not calling for the coaching staff to resign, but I am definitely calling for some change, b/c I do not want 2027 to be the first World Cup w/o #SWEWNT participating. If the current staff has a plan they firmly believe in, let them present it. If not, now is the time to act. There will be very little room for errors in December.
During this #FIFAWWC qualifying campaign #SWEWNT often looked like a plane that is trying to fly without a pilot. I am not even blaming the players (at least not primarily), b/c they were not the ones responsible for getting the selection, tactics, pre-game preparation & opposition scouting wrong.
More detailed analysis to come later this week, but one thing has to be accentuated rn: if we don't answer the wake up call and keep ignoring it, we should be getting ready for a very nervy December. Just sayin', so nobody can claim they we were not warned in advance.
Tony Gustavsson's numbers as #SWEWNT head coach after 8⃣ games in charge:
1⃣ win (hard-fought 1-0 at home vs 🇷🇸)
2⃣ draws
5⃣ losses
6⃣ goals for
1⃣3⃣ goals against
Worrying sign? Too early to panic?
New questions pop up with every international window and we desperately need to find the correct answer before late November. Otherwise, we may experience sth we are definitely not ready for.
Just for the record, as of now the most possible list of #SWEWNT opponents in the decisive play-off round looks as follows: 🇷🇸🇵🇱🇺🇦🇸🇮🏴🇨🇭🇵🇹🏴
🇸🇪 1 - 2 🇩🇰
Ten opening minutes were more than a flying start from #SWEWNT, a dream beginning to what later turned into a frustrating evening.
There seems to be a spontaneous post-game take that the final result is completely unjustified, but it is a statement I cannot completely agree with.
As said before, the opening 10-15 minutes were perfect, but as the first half progressed, it was Denmark that was able to create more dangerous (yet less frequent) chances from open play and capitzlize on errors from the opposing team. Therefore, the HT score mirrored the game proceedings pretty accurately.
2nd half? Yes, 74% of possession surely tell you one side of the story, but even before Thomsen's winning goal it was #DEN who had one clear cut chance to score (saved by the post).
Today we saw many defensive mishaps from the #SWEWNT side, Nelhage heavily involved in conceding the 1st, Andersson not having a good game overall, Falk did not come to the rescue like she did so many times for both Häcken and the NT. But let me repeat what I said after the Italy game: some lessons have to be learned, especially under the clear transition period.
My individual shout outs for ⭐️ performances:
🇸🇪 - Angeldal, Holmberg, Schröder
🇩🇰 - Fløe, Thøgersen, Sandbech
That's all folks, on to the next one! #SWEDEN #SWESRB
Also, well done Johanna Almgren!
100% win ratio as the #SWEWNT head coach does not sound bad at all! 👍
Man gillar ju oblyga #swewnt som åker ner och mosar Italien på bortaplan i VM-kval. Med två mittbackar som totalt gjort typ 3 CAPS. Släpper inte in ett mål. Bananas.
Härliga Sverige!
Here she comes #SWEWNT
Vinberg scoring the crucial equalizer for Spurs, Kapocs assisting Bergström's goal for Liverpool, Falk still making crucial saves, Zigiotti proudly bossing United midfield, Man. City vs Chelsea still to be played later today. Not a bad time to be alive... #BarclaysWSL #SWEWNT
Also, I know there are only ~5 ppl on this planet who care abt World Cup (final tournament) seeding pots atm, but France and Netherlands being drawn together is also a favorable scenario for #SWEWNT retaining their top seed status (aka top-8 of the FIFA Ranking) 🤷♂️
