I recently added support for hardware data watchpoint probes for user-space processes to the open-source #SystemTap, which allows defining such dynamic probes in dynamic tracing scripts and performing custom actions (such as statistical analysis) when the target application reads or writes (or only writes) a certain memory area. I have submitted this patch to the SystemTap official Git repository, which will be included in the next release. We also ported this patch to the Stap+ backend of the @OpenResty XRay product, which can be used later to implement some interesting advanced analyzers.
The following figure shows the corresponding Stap script test case, demonstrating its simplest usage. The variable `$^ADDR_a` in the test case will be automatically replaced by the test bench with the global variable "a"'s relative address in the target C program. This test case uses the Test::Base test bench test data description notation, which should be self-explanatory. It is worth mentioning that the official test cases of SystemTap are expressed in Expect/Tcl language, which is much more disgusting than my Test::Base description here, so I wrote a Perl script that automatically converts the test cases expressed in Test::Base into Tcl code for the SystemTap test suite, saving me a lot of trouble. Writing programs that write programs is one of the favorite tricks of experienced programmers.
