#sapsKZN [TWO SUSPECTS ARRESTED FOR KILLING A TAXI OWNER]
Police officers who are members of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial #TaxiViolence Unit have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of a taxi owner who was shot and killed outside his house at Meerensee in Richards Bay on 15 September 2026.
Reports indicate that the taxi owner was outside the yard of his house when three men arrived in a White Hyundai Atos and opened fire at him. The victim managed to fire some shots at the suspects before succumbing to gunshot wounds at the scene. One suspect was shot and injured in the leg.
The matter was referred to the Provincial Taxi Violence detectives who traced and found the vehicle that was used in the commission of the crime. Police uncovered that the vehicle was a hired car, and further investigations led police to KwaMashu where two men were taken in for questioning on 29 September 2026 and were later released. The operation continued to Durban Magistrate’s Court where one of the suspects, Sphamandla Mdlalose (30), the one who hired the vehicle, was appearing on a separate matter. He was arrested and investigations led police to his residence at Ntambanana. It was also established that he was part of the three suspects who shot the taxi owner.
On Wednesday, 30 September 2026, investigations directed police to Empangeni where they found a man who allegedly took the injured suspect to a traditional healer before he transported him to a hospital in Mooi River. He was arrested and the vehicle that was used to transport the suspect was seized.
Police are hot on the heels of the two suspects who were at the murder scene. Their identities are known and police are closing in on them. Mdlalose appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 1 October 2026, and was remanded in custody. He will be in the dock again on 7 October 2026 for bail consideration.
