The Waitangi Tribunal is currently operating as a grievance make-work scheme and way out of scope of its original purpose when it was established. Does it need to be abolished? Yes. But unfortunately the Act Party’s announcement comes straight out of Jim Bolger’s speech circa 1990 - where he said it will be wound up by 2014 once all settlements were completed. Remember that? “Once completed” means sometime never. This Act Party policy is the same illusion that Bolger had and doesn’t go far enough with the reality of dealing with the tribunal.
