An execution ends a life. It doesn't necessarily end the questions. Fifteen years ago, on September 21, 2011, Georgia executed. https://t.co/P18QOUCPT2 #TroyDavis #deathpenalty

On this day in 2011, Georgia executed Troy Davis despite new evidence of his innocence. The evidence was so compelling that three of his jurors urged the government to stop the execution.

I remember #TroyDavis, executed by the state of Georgia on Sept 21, 2011. No physical evidence linked him to the crime. 7 of the 9 eyewitnesses later recanted, some alleging police pressure. He was executed despite a movement of support from hundreds of thousands worldwide.

September 21, 2026 will mark 15 years since the State of Georgia put #TroyDavis to death, a man who maintained his innocence til the end. His case galvanized the public in a way few death penalty cases have. 15 years later, we continue to reflect on the true cost of the death penalty in our society and where we go from here.
We invite you to attend this program hosted by GADP and the Georgia Catholic Conference.

Jim Walden & his staff recruited Troy Davis to Iowa State — and he delivered history: back-to-back 2,000-yard rushing seasons (1995-96). Still unmatched in college football 30 years later. A true game-changer. 💛
Full tribute episode in bio.

"We must dismantle this unjust system, city by city, state by state, and country by country. I can't wait to stand with you, no matter if that is in physical or spiritual form. I will one day be announcing, I AM TROY DAVIS, and I AM FREE!"
We will never forget.

RIP Troy Davis #TroyDavis murdered by the state in 2011 under Obama’s administration.
Don’t blame us for Democratic ineptitude, the least of which includes allowing RGB to hold out and Obama not fighting tooth and nail for his pick bc they thought HER was inevitable. How do you save democracy behind a candidate that never won a primary and by limiting choices?
Back to Troy Davis…
Subsequent appeals, including to the Supreme Court, were rejected, and a fourth execution date was set for September 21, 2011. Nearly one million people signed petitions urging the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles to grant clemency.[5] The Board denied clemency[6] and, on September 21, it refused to reconsider its decision.[7] After a last-minute appeal to the United States Supreme Court was denied, Davis was executed on September 21, 2011.[8]

“… no physical evidence connected Davis to the crime, and seven out of nine witnesses recanted their testimony against him.”
Despite this, Troy Davis was still executed.
Please don’t repeat this act with Marcellus Williams
@GovParsonMO
On the morning of his scheduled execution, Troy Davis asked Wende Gozan-Brown of Amnesty International to share a message with the world. Davis said that,”The struggle for justice doesn’t end with me. This struggle is for all the Troy Davis’s who came before me and all the ones who will come after me.”
Troy Davis was executed on September 21, 2011.
In the months before Davis’s execution, people around the country urged Georgia to reconsider in light of the serious doubts about his guilt, including the fact that no physical evidence connected Davis to the crime, and seven out of nine witnesses recanted their testimony against him.
Davis’s last words were “I am innocent.”
The macabre truth is that Marcellus Williams’s final words will likely mirror that of Troy Davis’s in 2011.
According to data from the Innocence Project and the National Registry of Exonerations, a significant majority of people released from prison due to wrongful convictions are Black, with estimates around 57-61%of exonerated individuals identifying as Black.
This system is disproportionately targeted Black men, both on the streets, and in prisons as killable bodies and not human beings deserving of justice and the presumption of innocence.
Anti-Black Police Terrorism is not hyperbole. It is a fact. A fact that we are forced navigate every day.

In 3 days, Missouri @GovParsonMO wants to execute an innocent man.
This week, S. Carolina executed an innocent man.
In 2011, Georgia executed an innocent man.
We ALL must resist executions!
