The Bishops' Bible
London
1569
Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury, persuaded Queen Elizabeth I to replace the popular 1560 Geneva Bible with a new translation because of its controversial marginal commentary.
What became known as the Bishops' Bible was first printed in 1568.
This 1569 pocket-sized edition was intended for personal devotion. The title page shows Queen Elizabeth I as Supreme Governor of the Church.
Although the Bishops' Bible was used officially in parish churches, the Geneva Bible remained more popular for private worship.

Letter from King Christian IV of Denmark to King James VI of Scotland
10th October 1597
Anne of Denmark (wife of King James VI of Scotland) kept in close contact with her family in Denmark, including her mother, Sofie of Mecklenburg-Güstrow, and her brother, King Christian IV of Denmark.
James also shared a close relationship with his brother-law.
In this letter, written in Latin, Christian asks for portraits of James and Anne to be sent to Denmark to hang in his hall beside all his absent relatives,'
'so he can daily recollect his friends with pleasure.’

Silver medal with a bust of Edmund Withipoll
Edmund Withypoll was the son of Paul Withypoll and his wife Anne Curson.
He was a merchant, money-lender, landowner, sheriff and politician, who built Withipoll Howse (known now as Christchurch Mansion) between 1548-1550 as his home in Ipswich, Suffolk which survives to this day.
On display at The British Museum, London.

The Calthorpe Purse
c1540
Silk, linen, embroidering and hand stitching.
Formed of four shield-shaped panels carrying the coats of arms showing the arms of Sir Henry Parker (son of Sir Henry Parker, 1st Baron Morley) and Elizabeth Calthorpe (daughter and heiress of Sir Philip Calthorpe)
The workmanship that has gone into this purse is quite simply stunning.
During the sixteenth century, men and women carried or wore pouches or purses such as this example hanging from the waist, but we do not know if it was ever used in this capacity.
This example is more than likely associated with marriage rather than a purse used simply for money given the heraldic devices decorating it.
Due to its remarkable condition it was rarely used and as such well looked after.

1532 #OTD - Henry VIII bestowed the marquisate of Pembroke upon Anne Boleyn. With it came Welsh land worth over £1,000. The title was important to the Tudors as it was held by Henry VII's uncle & Pembroke was the birthplace of Henry VII #TudorTuesday

Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk Attributed to Hans Eworth
Second cousin of Queen Elizabeth I, he was arrested for his part in the Ridolfi Plot and was executed on Tower Hill 2nd June 1572.
