#Taleporia #tubulosa (here #male in park Rehberge, #Berlin) is a #moth, a member of clade #Psychidae. Bagworms Psychidae (Lepidoptera) branch off within Lepidoptera at a very basal position in their #phylogenetic tree. They belong to the #Tineoidea, an according to authors further below paraphyletic group of moth-like #butterflies that still show certain primeval similarities with the butterflies' closest relatives, the caddis flies. At least according to Regier et al. (2013) is a part of the Tineoidea the sister group of Apoditrysia, which also includes the well-known Rhopalocera butterflies. Similar to what we know from the caddis flies, the #larvae of the Psychidae also build a tubular dwelling from surrounding material. This #tube gets longer and wider with the larvae's growth due to several moltings, because the larvae regularly add new material to it. Finally they attach the head end to a surface so that the larvae can prepare for their #pupalstage. For this purpose, the #caterpillar turns in order to be able to leave the tube through its rear end when it #hatches. The caterpillars of T. tubulosa feed on green algae and lichens and attach themselves for #pupation to all kinds of artificial and natural elevations, such as walls. The #sexualdimorphism is very distinct, in contrast to the males, the females remain maggot-like and wingless and are still waiting at the place of their hatching for the male to mate with it. The animals are very short-living as adults and no longer eat due to stunted mouthparts.
