▪️A report from Fox News highlighted this tension, which was evident in the contrasting messages issued by hard-line and moderate Taliban leaders during the recent Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.
▪️Fox News reported that moderate Taliban factions in Afghanistan are seeking external support by presenting a more positive image to the world and moving away from severe policies.
▪️In his Eid-ul-Fitr statement, the Supreme Leader of Afghanistan, Haibatullah Akhundzada, emphasized the defense of self-determined Islamic laws and denounced criticism from the international community.
▪️Conversely, #Afghan Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani urged the Taliban to maintain decency and avoid actions that would upset the Afghan populace.
▪️Since the Taliban's takeover in 2021, their governance, especially the restrictions on women, has led to significant international condemnation and further isolation.
▪️During an Eid sermon in Kandahar, Haibatullah Akhunzada was uncompromising, stating, "If anyone has a problem with us, we are ready to solve it, but we will never compromise on our principles or Islam. I will not take a step back from Sharia."
▪️In contrast, Sirajuddin Haqqani delivered a message in Dari and Pashto, emphasizing the need to avoid creating rifts between the people and the authorities. His message differed notably from Akhundzada's, highlighting the challenges facing the country.
▪️Michael Kugelman of the Wilson Center noted that Haqqani aims to appear more approachable to garner the trust and support of the Afghan public, given the Taliban's harsh governance style. He added that the Haqqani Network is seeking international investment and support.
▪️The Taliban's stringent social policies, especially regarding women, are major hurdles in negotiations, according to Kugelman.
▪️The Taliban have banned women from education beyond sixth grade, employment, and public spaces like parks. They have also reinstated corporal punishment and public executions, reminiscent of their rule in the late 1990s.
▪️These severe policies have contributed to economic decline, exacerbated by a lack of foreign aid, and the nation is now grappling with widespread drought, hunger, and homelessness.
▪️#Pakistani journalist and author Ahmed Rasheed noted that while there are moderate elements within the Taliban who support women's education, they are currently weak and biding their time.
▪️"Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundzada has undoubtedly set the record straight, but he has no answers to most of the people's questions," Rasheed stated.
