#TankThings Very interesting thread...

Loved the recent @WeHaveWaysPod Ep.565 Sherman Deaths. As an armoured exponent I thought I’d provide some context to ‘Why Soldiers Uparmour’ vehicles and why commanders don’t want them to! (1/6) #wehaveways #TANKS #History #twitterstorians

1/ Wheels vs tracks: a short series of threads on relative merits of each, continuing with one on the ability to negotiate obstacles. TLDR: tracks are generally better at obstacle negotiation whether natural or man made.

The Middle Don Offensive Operation (codenamed Little Saturn) began #OTD in 1942. The Red Army cut off any possibility of relieving Paulus at Stalingrad, destroying several Italian and Romanian units as well as dealing serious losses to German divisions. #tanks #history #WW2

#OTD in 1942 infantry handrails were added to the KV-1S tank. Combined with the tank's large size, this allowed it to carry up to 15 riders to battle. #tanks #history #WW2

The T-80 tank was accepted into service #OTD in 1942. It was an improvement over the T-70B, but due to the changing role of the light tank on the battlefield very few were actually produced. #tanks #history #WW2

The Medium Tank M4A3E2 was a tremendous success, and the question of a similarly up-armoured variant of the Pershing was raised #OTD in 1944. The resulting tank called T26E5 was completely proofed against the 88 mm L/71 gun at a weight of just 46 tons. #tanks #history #WW2

#OTD in 1939 Porsche began working on a new heavy tank. The result of this work was the VK 30.01 (P). This tank was never completed, but it was an important step towards the VK 45.01 (P) or Porsche Tiger. #tanks #history #WW2

Happy Cambrai Day to the @RoyalTankRegt . OTD, 1917, Maj Gen Hugh Elles issued his hand written Special Order #6, still read each 20 Nov. In 476 tanks, men of the new Tank Corps advanced towards Cambrai under the brown, red & green colours of the Corps’ new flag, led by Elles.

Trials of a T-34 tank with an enlarged turret ring, new turret, and the 85 mm D-5T gun began #OTD in 1943. This tank was accepted into service as the T-34-85, although the majority of T-34-85s were built with the more compact ZIS-S-53 gun. #tanks #History #WW2

The Object 240 was accepted into service as the IS-122 or IS-2 #OTD in 1943. This tank officially remained in service until 1993, making it the longest serving heavy tank in history. #tanks #History #WW2
