Nothing teaches you Kubernetes faster than spending a month debugging logs on bare metal ๐ญ
At the @amazonwebservices AWS Hero Summit, I asked fellow AWS Hero @Njuchi_ of #TechWorldWithNana about the biggest Kubernetes nightmare of her career.
She learned Kubernetes the hard way:
No managed service.
No abstraction layer.
Just bare-metal servers...
...and everything that could go wrong, did.
The hardest part was getting logs from every microservice to the right destination, in the right format, without losing dataโand then making all of it searchable and useful.
Add networking failures, persistent volumes, and monitoring into the mix, and you get what Nana called:
โA nightmare times 10.โ ๐ซจ
The biggest lesson?
Observability isnโt something you add after the system is built.
Itโs part of the architecture.
Before scaling your Kubernetes environment:
โ
Standardize how every service structures its logs
โ
Decide where logs are collected, processed, and stored
โ
Test what happens when the network or logging pipeline fails
โ
Make sure you can detect missing dataโnot just visualize the data that arrived
Kubernetes can automate a lot.
But it can also automate your chaos if the foundations arenโt right.
