Worth the money: No
With long development time and performance subpar to what they can get from @nvidia . The question is whether @elonmusk was sandbagging the actual performance. So for now, wasn’t worth the money.
TSMC stated that Tesla's DOJO supercomputing chip wafers are already in mass production and will soon be extensively deployed.

While it's not true that they manufacture their own chips, they design the chips currently running in #tesla for #fsd. From what I remember this was 10x faster for the specialized use case with lower power consumption. That doesn't really translate to whether #tesladojo will be 10s of times faster. Here's why:
Driving the car was a specialized use case that the #NVIDIA soc offering wasn't really designed for but was merely an adaptation using an existing architecture, whereas the training of Teslas AI solution using video data is within the typical use case for AI training, which is exactly what the H100 chips that NVIDIA manufactures are designed for. Beating nvidia in this space or even catching up is not likely to occur in one generation, though not entirely impossible.
For #Tesla, it makes sense to bet on DOJO and try to build their own because there is a chance they get some alleviation on their bottleneck of not having enough H100s, but that doesn't mean they'll suddenly outperform NVIDIA. Keep in mind that AMD and Intel are both chasing nvidia as well, with AMD having a much closer IP in their MI instinct GPUs AMD recent breakthroughs have shown some competitiveness, but this is years of the only other GPU manufacturer developing their tech to try to catch up, it would be naive to assume that Tesla will suddenly beat both AMD and Nvidia in semiconductor design for AI.
Of course, I'm hoping that DOJO is a tremendous success, and I'm hoping they can augment their AI training cluster with AMD GPUs in light of the recent breakthroughs, and i know they have people at Tesla exploring this option every day right now.
Anyway, it's reductionist and false to claim Tesla is making their chips in-house. Developed: yes. Manufactured at TSMC. To assume Tesla is also competing with TSMC, INTEL, SAMSUNG, HYNIX, ETC at semiconductor manufacturing shows that you don't really know how this stuff works or the current state of computing technology and its manufacturing paradigms.
