The #TestPit at Burnivale has uncovered some spectacular finds! Ashley, Dottie, and Angus are digging the #TestPit at Westgate Cottage. Angus has found 3 pieces of blue and white pottery that he's been able to fit back together. Other highlight finds from the test pit include a beautiful yellow glass bead and a small metal button. More curious than the finds, despite the test pit being on the hillside, the soil layers are perfectly flat. From this, we can tell that the hill has been terraced, and from the date of the finds, this may have been fairly recent (at least to an archaeologist's time scale) #Athelstan1100 @MuseumAthelstan @MalmesburyCivic #CommunityDig

We know that the building along Church Street used to run uninterrupted. We are looking for the these buildings which we know were knocked down at some point around the early 1850's. The #TestPit has started answering our questions. We have found a robbed out wall where we would expect, given the standing houses still on the road. Volunteers Freya and Alex are now removing fills from this robbed out wall and building demolition to hopefully find dateable evidence. #Athelstan1100 @MalmesburyCivic @MuseumAthelstan

The #TestPit at Roundmead has dug through the Victorian midden deposit to uncover more domestic waste. In these layers, we are finding Staffordshire slipware, which dates to the late 17th to early 18th century. They have also uncovered a deposit of animal bones, including ribs. We wonder if we've found the remains of a 17th-century Sunday roast? #Athelstan1100 @MuseumAthelstan @MalmesburyCivic #CommunityDig

The #TestPit at Parliament Row, as part of the #BigDig at #Malmesbury, has uncovered a path! We believe this may be the old footpath from when the cottages were first built in 1837. Since then, with many keen gardeners, the ground level has risen, burying the path under about 30cm of soil #Athelstan1100 @MuseumAthelstan @MalmesburyCivic #CommunityDig
