Sweltering Cells: The Harsh Reality of Texas Prisons Lacking Air Conditioning Amid Extreme Heat
Approximately 70% of prisons in Texas lack air conditioning in inmate living areas. The temperature inside these prisons during the summer can reach dangerously high levels, with reports indicating that temperatures can soar to 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
According to a report by ABC13, temperatures inside some Texas prison facilities have reached as high as 106 degrees Fahrenheit[1]. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) is required to keep an indoor heat log, and investigations have found that in one facility, the indoor afternoon temperature exceeded 100 degrees for 11 consecutive days in early August[1]. Similarly, a report by PreventionWeb notes that temperatures inside many prisons can reach 110 degrees or above[2].
USA Today also reported on the issue, stating that almost 70% of TDCJ prisons lack air conditioning and that units routinely reach temperatures of 100 degrees or higher[3]. The Intercept adds that Texas has more jails, prisons, and detention centers impacted by severe to extreme heat than any other state, with nine in 10 of the state’s carceral facilities located in places with more than 50 days a year of 90-plus-degree heat indexes[4].
The Associated Press has reported that only about 30% of Texas' 100 prison units are fully air-conditioned, with the rest having partial or no air conditioning[5]. Texas Public Radio also highlighted that June temperature readings at TDCJ facilities with unairconditioned housing revealed that the state was overwhelmingly in excess of 85 degrees[6].
These conditions have raised concerns about the safety and well-being of inmates and staff, with advocacy groups and families of inmates calling for changes to ensure that temperatures inside prisons are kept at safe levels[1][2][3][4][5][6].
