Quel 1° luglio del 1978, il Cotton Bowl di Dallas si trasformò in un gigantesco crocevia di rock con 100.000 fan accaldati sotto un sole feroce, uno dei giorni più caldi del decennio. La temperatura ufficiale era di 40°C, ma sul campo, coperto da un telo nero per proteggere il prato, il calore percepito saliva fino a sfiorare i 49°C.
Sul palco si alternarono leggende come Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Heart, Journey e Van Halen, mentre Cheech & Chong intrattenevano con sketch comici tra una band e l’altra. I biglietti costavano solo 13 dollari, un prezzo irrisorio per uno spettacolo di tale portata.
La crew, per sopravvivere al caldo torrido e salvare il pubblico dal collasso, spruzzava acqua dal getto degli idranti, regalando un sollievo temporaneo in quella giornata epica che segnò l’inizio di una delle rassegne rock più iconiche degli Stati Uniti.
