Coming up next week: another #The3DLab PhD defense, this time from Jan Clavel!
The topic?
The potential for upward range expansion of alien plant species in cold-climate mountains in a warming world.
And a lot of mycorrhizae :)

Hooray, our @MIREN_mountains resurvey is finished!
Thanks to the enthusiasm of #The3DLab team in the field 😍.
So proud of their effort, and so curious to see how much plant movement up and down the mountain our decade of data is showing!

Fieldwork notes and pictures from the legendary* valley: Låktatjåkka
*At least, legendary for us at #The3DLab, as we have done fieldwork here every year since my own PhD in 2014

Made it to Kiruna! Now swapped the emergency rental car for this beast that can host the 7-head strong #the3dlab team. And then on to Gällivare to grab 4 more members stranded there. Quite the adventure 😬

New papers always bring joy, but if they are led by #The3DLab students, the levels of joy immediately quadruple!
And if they finally reveal how mountain trails locally promote plant species richness by having species expand their realized niche, it gets even better!

Beauty in the mail today! The book 'Stories of Arctic Science' by @INTERACT66, including a little chapter on the work we have been doing in Abisko with their financial support🤩!
This program has meant a lot to me and our dreams in #The3DLab!

Big and happy day, yesterday! #The3DLab hero Charly Géron defended his PhD on plant invasions along the urban-rural gradient. A little🧵 to celebrate his main findings.

What. A. Day. For #The3DLab, yesterday! Charly Geron successfully passed his private PhD defence, @TW_FieldNotes submitted her 2nd paper, and I got to read a manuscript by @Edofuenteslillo I had dreamed of writing since my own PhD!
I find it very important that students know how to communicate their thesis topic to a broad audience. To challenge them, I asked this years' #the3dlab master students to describe the plan for their thesis in a tweet and a blog post. A🧵of their awesome work, one every day⬇️
Lab-art 😍. Had a team of 4 #the3dlab master students working away at soil samples from Abisko, Sweden, today, and it was so marvelous to have a happy team working together and making swift progress!

Great work lead by #the3dlab PhD candidate @Edofuenteslillo, here seen taking soil samples along a Chilean mountain road

A warmer climate of origin does not necessarily protect exotic plants from heatwaves such as our country has experienced in recent summers. What does? Local #microclimates
NEW PAPER lead by #The3DLab PhD candidate Charly Géron!

A day in a Flemish heathland to prepare 2 PhD-students and 4 master students as best as I can for the summer in Abisko. 75% of plant species could be seen almost 20° more north 😲. #the3dlab

Cool experimental work in the making by ex-#The3DLab master student Nina! Keeping a close eye on this🧐
Nina Roth presented her PhD-thesis work as a half-way seminar: The effect of extreme weather events and land use change on grassland communities

@TW_FieldNotes went on a cross-country ski trip to measure snow depth in her seed-addition plots in the Norwegian mountains.
So happy #the3dlab has such a brave member who brings us this important winter #microclimate data

Much-needed: baseline monitoring of non-native plant invasions in Svalbard! A recent study led by @JesamineCB including our #The3DLab member @TW_FieldNotes found 36 alien plant species on the islands. Important: exclusively in areas with human activity

We launched a call for the world to help out with the @SoilTemp_proj-database. Important, as we believe that biodiversity can’t be saved without good climate data, and coverage is poorest in many of the most biodiverse regions. #The3DLab

#The3DLab has a mission: help battle the biodiversity and climate crisis. Important to keep in mind in the day-to-day routine of doing science. The end of the year is a good time to reflect on what stones we moved in the river.
I present: The Labs' 2020!

#The3DLab had a fun meeting to close off the year: show us the favourite figure you made in 2020, and show us one figure you hope to make in 2021.
A meeting that filled me with joy, as it showed how much the lab has grown again over the year

#The3DLab 2021 countdown #9 - In February, we called for underrepresented regions in the @SoilTemp_proj network. 10 months later, and despite a global pandemic, most sensors made it to the field!
But the work is far from done - hopefully more in 2021!
