To coincide with the first Conference Finals game for the #Islanders since 1993, I decided to post one of my hockey cards.
#TheDailyCard Steve Thomas: He played for the Islanders from 1991-95. Steve also played for the #Leafs, #Blackhawks, #Devils, #MightyDucks and #RedWings.
#TheDailyCard Paul Molitor: HOF Class of 2004. One of my first signed cards (when I used ballpoint pen) was acquired in 1981. I recall the thrill knowing Molitor was on verge of being a star. Reflected on this frequently when he left Milwaukee to finally win World Series in ‘93.
#TheDailyCard Doug Konieczny: pronounced “kuh-NEZ-nee”. One of only five MLB players from Wayne State University (including #BlueJays Anthony Bass). Was surprised Lou Brock once stole 2nd on first pitch, without seeing his delivery. Said Brock, “I saw it during batting practice.”
#TheDailyCard Lynn Jones: an exceedingly kind man, his affability made a lasting impact on this teenager in the early ‘80’s. He always had time to chat whenever the Tigers or Royals came to Toronto. Later became coach for World Series winning Red Sox in ‘04. Card signed in ‘83.

#TheDailyCard Bruce Bochte: first Mariner to get a hit in All-Star Game. 8th among Seattle’s OBP leaders (ahead of Ichiro). After baseball, focused on cosmology and ecology. Says restoring a salmon run to a creek in Washington is his “crowning achievement”. Card signed in 1983.
#TheDailyCard Mario Lemieux: on January 16, 1988, Lemieux scored his 45th goal of the year in Toronto. As he waited to be announced as the first star, he looked to his right, saw me, and handed over his stick. After four years of asking politely, success! Card signed in 1985.
#TheDailyCard Bjorn Borg: arguably the most recognizable superstar of the ‘70’s, internationally. Won first Grand Slam at age eighteen, 11 overall (6 French, 5 Wimbledon). Like Sandy Koufax, shocked the sports world by retiring in his prime (at age 26). Card signed in 1983.
#TheDailyCard Enos Cabell: signed as undrafted free agent by Orioles in 1968. Traded to Houston for Lee May in ‘74. Later played with cousin Ken Landreaux on ‘85 Dodgers. Another cousin Dick Davis was with #BlueJays briefly. Cabell is an advisor with Astros. Card signed in ‘82.
#TheDailyCard Robin Yount: HOF Class of ‘99. Remains last 18-year-old big leaguer to hit home run. Played 20 years in Milwaukee, winning MVP twice. Reached 3000 hits in ‘92. Brother Larry was injured warming up for big league debut and never appeared again. Card signed in ‘84.

#TheDailyCard Tom Burgmeier: demoted to AAA in ‘73 for being KC’s MLBPA player rep. On August 3, 1980, Don Zimmer sent him to LF (replacing Jim Rice) after he got first two outs in 9th in case he was needed to face Mickey Rivers. Still plays hockey at age 76. Card signed in ‘82.
