#TheEvilEye (1963) : The first-ever film in the "giallo" genre is an unexpected Hitchcockian gem by Mario Bava. I wouldn't have believed it if anyone had told me that the horror legend Mario Bava had made a murder mystery as good as Alfred Hitchcock. This new genre, called giallo, is said to have started here, and I believe that this film is one of the best ever made in that genre, despite being so new at that time. This is a very suitable version of a Hitchcockian film in Italian cinema, and it has a surrealistic touch as well. You can sense it when you see Marcello prompting Nora for a kiss for the first time. It almost looks like a forced sexual activity, but it isn't. That's how this one stands apart from regular murder mysteries. Nora's narration and dialogue delivery also take this film into a different zone, as the character has realistic layers and a confusing state suitable for her age. The film follows the story of Nora, who arrives in Italy for a holiday. She witnesses the death of an old lady, followed by the murder of a woman on the street. It is revealed that the murder actually took place 10 years ago and she saw the past events. She, along with Dr. Marcello, begins an investigation and dives deep into the mystery of the serial murders that happened a decade ago. The murders follow a chain, in alphabetical order, and Nora's surname suggests that she is the next victim. Will she be able to save herself? There are too many twists here, and you'll enjoy all of them. The unrealistic idea of a girl seeing past events seems convincing, and then the suspense in the climax makes it believable. The gripping screenplay, haunting themes, solid performances, good cinematography, tight editing, and excellent direction—the film is blessed in all departments of quality filmmaking. Strongly recommended for real cinema enthusiasts.
