#TheFaceBehindTheMask (1941) :
A moral crime drama about the horrors of life that needs to be appreciated on a wider scale.
Peter Lorre was so convincing in this movie that it feels like he was born to play this role. Sometimes an actor looks so perfect in a certain role that it feels like he owns the character, or sometimes it just suits his own personality. In the opening scene, you see Lorre talking gently yet somewhat foolishly, and you are convinced that he is too naive to understand and live in the crazy world. When tragedy occurs and he loses his face, he becomes an outcast and is unable to make a living. This leads him to join the dark side— the crime world—making him rich but empty inside. He meets a beautiful girl who starts to like him, but there is a twist. Since the girl is blind, she can't see his face, and that's why she likes him—because she can see beyond physical beauty. The guy thinks otherwise, and the girl also has the thought that he might not love her since she is blind. Two people with incomplete personalities find a complete partner in each other, creating a very emotional angle beautifully articulated by the writer. But as we know, such crime stories always face some tragedy when things are looking good, and that happens here as well. Despite that predictability, the film concludes with a fantastic noir touch as the hero gets perfect revenge. Watch out for that. For a film with a runtime of 68 minutes, I believe "The Face Behind the Mask" has done an exceptional job, and for its time, i.e., the '40s, this is really more than enough for a small life. I'm shocked to see this film being underrated for so long. Lorre was excellent in the lead role, and Evelyn Keyes was remarkably charming as his lady. The supporting cast has also performed well in this beautifully crafted and directed horror-crime-noir by Robert Florey. I wish I had seen it earlier. Better late than never; don’t be late now.
