In many Q-and-As before he became leader and before Harry Reid deployed #TheReidRule, @senatemajldr opposed changing the filibuster rules. But once blown up for nominees Reid wanted confirmed, McConnell wasn’t going to have it work against GOP nominees. Absurd to rewrite history.
Then Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist threatened to deploy the “nuclear option” when serial Democratic filibusters of W’s judicial nominees began even after @SenateGOP won majority in 2002 elections. That threat was undone by “Gang of 14.” Reid actually used #TheReidRule.
The more reasonable argument is that @SenateGOP was first to threaten “the nuclear option,” which would become #TheReidRule that a majority of the body, even though it is a “continuing body,” can change the rules by simple majority as opposed to a supermajority.
Simple fact: @senatemajldr would never have destroyed the filibuster for nominees as Harry Reid did. He argued against it passionately in majority and minority. But #CocaineMitch wasn’t going to let Reid have one set of rules for changing the rules for Ds and one for Rs. #Fact
And @senatemajldr has worked with #TheReidRule to assure that the former Democratic Senator Majority Leader’s most lasting legacy is Reid’s insistence that Senate become a purely majoritarian institution on nominations. #CocaineMitch has also provided wise counsel to @POTUS. 2
