#Thingthursday while The Undefeated focuses on the stories of enlisted men I acquired this wartime POW logbook of Major J.A. Brewer of the East Yorkshire Regiment. 1/

My #ThingThursday this week is a cigarette card of the 18 (Eastern) Division from the First World War. My great-great uncle Denis Crotty fought in the Machine Gun Corps in 18 Division, beginning as a replacement for casualties on the first day of the Somme. He then fought from Trones Wood in mid-July through to his death on 26 August 1918 near Mourlancourt.
The 18 Division, under another hero of mine Maj. Gen. Ivor Maxse, was one of the few units to take all of their objectives on the first day of the Somme, and became one of the most trusted divisions in the British Army in the war. This is llustrated by their 34 instances of going 'over the top' - the most in the war by a non-regular division.

#thingthursday the signature of Viscount Montgomery of Alamein which I found among the papers of former POW Maurice Brown. Maurice was wanted to turn his POW diary into a book and had contacted Monty to ask about a rumour he had heard attributed to him.

Not really sure if this week's #ThingThursday is something my Grandfather had made, or was actually a thing that was given formally when he left the army (former seems more likely tbh). But it is another little reminder of his short time as a National Serviceman in the late 1940s, driving Sexton SPGs in Germany, mostly at Sennelager.
I have a fair few photos from training or exercises he went on. He used to tell me about his time, usually whilst watching war films, and the fact a number of his senior NCOs had fought through from the Battle of Normandy and into Germany (11 Armoured Division went in a week after D-Day).

My #ThingThursday is a cap badge for possibly my favourite tank regiment in the Burma Campaign - 3 Carabiniers. They fight in the Battle of Imphal like a fire service being deployed to threatened sectors across the perimeter of the plain, including up in the mountains around the Silchar Track and most significantly Nunshigum. They also refined the bunker-busting method after 25 Dragoons in Second Arakan and the Admin Box had proved their training worked.
Even after the Battle of Imphal two troops of C Squadron advance through the 1944 monsoon down the Tiddim Road, and one tank even climbs Kennedy Peak - 8900ft high (pic 3)! They then advanced to Mandalay supporting 2 British Division, and enter the south of the city in March 1945, although 19 Indian Division cleared most of the city advancing from the north.
Even then they push south in Irrawaddy Valley and help destroy the rest of Burma Area Army - some tanks reported their guns had worn to be smoothbore by the time campaign was over! They are a big part of my first book Forgotten Armour.

My #ThingThursday this week is a nice little find, a First World War era watch, it somehow still ticks if I wind it but doesn't keep time so I just leave it be. The strap claimed to be original but who knows, its certainly old. I liked it and it wasn't too much (for an antique watch). For scale, here it is next to one of my 14 Army Lego men! All the lume is gone from the hands, but I think itโs an exquisite piece of craftsmanship.

Having missed #ThingThursday last week while I was unwell, I'm back! Its another example of a birthday present that shows how my wife secretly supports my 'war parp'!
