Not My Family. Not Yours!!!
When today’s politicians say “#third_world,” they’re not analyzing global development patterns.
They’re talking about our parents, our grandparents, our friends, our communities.
They’re talking about the places where we crawled, learned kindness, where we buried loved ones, where we celebrated births and weddings, where we became who we are.
To call that “third” is to say our people are less.
Less civilized.
Less worthy.
Less human.
But our families are not “third.”
They are proud, resilient, generous, brilliant.
They’ve endured colonialism, racism, imperialism, wars, poverty, migration, discrimination and still held their heads high with dignity and pride.
And history matters here.
The term “third world” didn’t come from cultural understanding or respect.
It came from the Cold War, an era when powerful nations divided humanity into categories for their own geopolitical purposes:
•First World: wealthy Western allies
•Second World: the Soviet bloc
•Third World: everyone else—mostly the peoples of Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East
Over time the term drifted away from politics and became a label of inferiority, applied almost exclusively to non-white, formerly colonized nations.
As post-colonial thinkers like Fanon, Said, and Spivak warn us, language like this isn’t neutral.
It carries the weight of empire.
It carries the old hierarchies that once justified domination.
“Third world” is not a description—it’s a judgment.
A ranking.
A leftover from a worldview that saw some societies as the pinnacle of humanity and others as permanently behind.
And we’re done being spoken to like that.
Our people deserve dignity.
Our countries deserve respect.
Our stories deserve more than a number on a colonial ladder that was never meant to honor us.
If you talk about us, talk with love.
If you talk about our homelands, talk with understanding.
Because nothing about the places we come from is “third.”
They are human.
They are sacred.
They are ours.
And the world is richer because we come from them.
