#ThirtyDaysofThanks Faithful. That’s one of many aspects of our Lord. He knows our needs, and He is always with us. One of my favorite hymns is also a hymn of thanksgiving. Thomas Chisholm wrote ‘Great Is Thy Faithfulness’ in 1921, shortly after WW1 and the great death count of the Spanish Flu.
If you know the song, then you’re already humming it, but if it’s unfamiliar, here are links to the lyrics and a video. ( Great Is Thy Faithfulness | https://t.co/4kTWFLmOpo - video https://t.co/31ZWjSKyw6 )
What hymn of thanksgiving do you often sing? #NovemberThankfulness
#ThirtyDaysofThanks Families and their interactions are as old as the garden. Adam and Eve formed part of the first family, but not just as husband and wife, but as children — with God as their father. Sadly, as with all children since, the first humans disobeyed. Yet, despite this willful behavior, the Father provided a temporary covering and forgiveness. And He promised an ultimate Savior whose blood would cover all.
After banishment from Eden, Adam begat two sons in succession, and he became the father. Cain murdered Abel, which surely broke Adam’s heart — and he began to understand the true impact of his sin.
As generations begat generations, families continued to form the heart of civilization. Millennia later, this primary unit have begun to degrade. Soon babies will be grown in artificial wombs, and the State will replace human parents. God’s family-based model is under attack. The same enemy that whispered in the Garden wants to rip families apart.
And so, let’s thank God for families, imperfect as they are, for they form the most powerful unit in spiritual warfare. #NovemberThankfulness
#ThirtyDaysofThanks Rather than write a longish essay this morning, let me recall the words of a couple of old song we learned in Sunday School:
🎶Thank you, Lord
For saving my soul
Thank you, Lord
For making me whole
Thank you, Lord
For giving to me
Thy great salvation
So rich and free.
Of course, salvation did have a price; however Jesus paid it:
🎶Jesus paid it all
All to Him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow!
Have a blessed day, my friends! 💖🤗✝️ #NovemberThankfulness
#ThirtyDaysofThanks When God created the world, He included non-living as well as living things. Amongst the former are rocks.
Most kids love to collect rocks: Pebbles, fossils, geodes, all manner of crystalline materials that shimmer and sparkle. Rock polishing machines slowly smooth rough surfaces into sleek shapes that bring out the intricate beauty of color and form.
As we age, we enjoy the vast complexity of caverns and canyons. Layered stripes of sedimentary shades form walls around us as we drive highways cut through mountains and hills. Ancient volcanic ash leaves its secrets in basalt black. Iron streaks stone with glorious russet. God’s fingerprints are on display throughout these rocky places. His winds reduce mountains to rubble, and over time can pound the rubble into sand.
Rocks leave messages from human habitation through crude cairns, carved monuments, and magnificent cathedrals. Everywhere we look, rocks tell the story of our Creator and our creations. They cry out! So thank you, Lord, for adding these ‘non-living’ participants in our world’s history. May every pebble cry out your Name. #NovemberThankfulness
#ThirtyDaysofThanks Mice are remarkable little creatures. Generally, we think of mice as pests, but these tiny mammals help gardens by eating weed seeds, and their droppings help to fertilize plants.
Sadly, their biggest contribution to an ecosystem is food for predators; thereby bridging plant and animal systems. But surely the Lord created mice for a purpose other than food. Can they teach us something? Trust, perhaps? The mouse has few defenses, yet goes about each day, trusting in God for protection.
Mice are preppers. They store seeds for winter. Derek and I have found several seed stashes in our house! Mice are industrious but vulnerable. In a way, they’re like you and I. As Christians, we do our best to make each day count, trusting in God’s protection against spiritual predators.
So the next time you see a humble little mouse, consider the lesson this tiny creature can teach you. #NovemberThankfulness
#ThirtyDaysofThanks Who else makes mistakes? Who else sins? If we’re honest, every one of us will admit to making lots of poor, even harmful choices. Humans are willfully sinful creatures.
When the Lord gave mankind free will, He gave us the freedom to make mistakes. I’m not referring to errors of judgment like picking the wrong paint color or failing to follow driving directions. I’m referring to those willful choices that we prefer to minimize with the gentle word ‘mistake’ rather than admit the choice was a SIN. We all make such mistakes, and though I regret them all, I thank God for every foolish mistake. Why? My sinful nature reminds me of His boundless grace.
Understand, each and every one of my free-will choices could have been different. I could have chosen wisely. My choice caused the mistake.
Free will means we’re not robots or automatons. Free will is proof of God’s love. More often than not, humans choose foolishly. And YET, God loves us. He even provided a solution to all our mistakes, a cure for all our sins: Himself. God became one of US, and through a life without even a shadow of mistake or sin, God became the perfect substitute. He died for us.
Our mistakes are reminders of his selfless sacrifice. As believers, we must strive to reduce those mistakes and choose well, but we will never be perfect. Our old natures make that impossible.
When I look back on the wayward, imperfect choices of my life, I see a beautiful garment, wrought in His perfect blood. I see God’s everlasting love. #NovemberThankfulness
#ThirtyDaysofThanks History. It’s one of those classes nearly everyone dreads in grade school. Generally, this is due to a traditional date-based teaching style, but some just find it boring, no matter the method.
I have always loved history, but the older I get, the more I want to dig into the past. That old adage that ‘those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat’ it is true. Perhaps that’s one reason the Lord created writing. Through visual representation we can look into our own distant past and learn from it. Writing allows us to express ourselves in the present and speak to future generations. History is written for our education and edification. It is HIS story.
So today, I thank God for teaching us about Himself by teaching us to record history. It’s so much more than dates — it’s our inheritance. #NovemberThankfulness
#ThirtyDaysofThanks Time and our perception of its passage is one of those concepts that keeps scientists, theologians, and philosophers writing books and staring into the heavens. We see only its effects, not Time itself. Time is a blessing.
I’m not getting any younger, and yet each day and evening bring me one day nearer to Christ. Signs and seasons help us to discern His coming. Though our daily routine might distract us with chores and appointments, Time — that abstract concept — is moving towards His promised return. The last few metaphorical sands are dropping, one by one, through a prophetic hour glass. Thus, Time is like a friendly sentinel. So today, I thank the Lord for Time and how it reveals His plans. #NovemberThankfulness
#ThirtyDaysofThanks Most of us make ready and ample use of our voices. Sadly, a few have no ability to speak — either congenitally or from disease — but the vast majority have a voice and use it.
Speech is a gift, and so today I thank the Lord for this precious present. Language and comprehension are absolute miracles. One need only watch a foreign film or news report to realize the importance of clear communication. With voice and language we sing, teach, ask questions, laugh, discuss, and we pray. We speak to our Creator. We petition the King of all kings! And He hears us! How marvelous!
We must never take our voices for granted. Intelligible communication is a gift. Speaking is a gift. Singing is a gift. Praying is a privilege. #NovemberThankfulness
#ThirtyDaysofThanks Today, I thank the Lord for our senses. These allow us to interact with creation. Our eyes perceive the beauty of the world, recognize loved ones, and read pages if a book. Our ears hear voices, music, and a child’s cry. Our noses bring delightful aromas, sweet scent, and add to the enjoyment of food. Taste enhances our consumption of nutrients, perceives the danger in spoiled food, and adds to the sweet joy of a gentle kiss. Touch makes our hands sensitive enough to mold clay, gentle enough to stroke a child’s face, or agile enough to build a house.
These five traditional senses are augmented by less objective ones: knowing where we are in space, sensing movement, danger, the passage of time, the presence of His Spirit. We are intricately fashioned and wonderfully made. How marvelous! #November #NovemberThankfulness
#ThirtyDaysofThanks - Today, I thank God for the book of all books, the Bible. Thank you, Lord, for filling imperfect men with your perfect words. Thank you for preserving history and all your promises. Thank you for those who copied and protected the manuscripts — sometimes at the cost of their lives.
The Bible is Israel’s story, our story, but most of all HIS story — our Savior, Christ our Lord. The blood of Jesus is woven throughout every word, every page. #NovemberThankfulness
