Really had to drag myself away from the patch for work this morning! 80 House Martins feeding over #ThompsonWater, a sprinkling of Sand Martins, the trees dripping with Chiffchaffs & a Spotted Flycatcher feeding above my car at the end of the walk - typical! Beautiful morning. π
A visit to #ThompsonWater yesterday revealed that autumn had arrived, with a mass of ducks arriving just in time for @WeBS_UK at the weekend & two Common Terns were fluttering about, which was a nice surprise. ππ¦
An abysmal @WeBS_UK count saved by all the goings on of 'spring things'. Air filled with bird song, me having no idea if it's hot or cold out, the first House Martins on patch for 2024, stunning scenery and getting confused by creamy-white butterflies! #ThompsonWater
Toadally (sorry) stunning morning at #ThompsonWater! Siskins singing their little hearts out, Chiffchaffs chiff-chaffing, Buzzards mewing & displaying overhead, Cetti's Warblers singing from the scrub at the waters edge and Wigeon whistling...

A first for #ThompsonWater this morning: Man in thong speedos & sliders walking along the woodland track towards me! π Guess a swimmer but wasn't near water/a car. Brave since mossies are notorious at Thompson! π€£

Late @WeBS_UK duck count at #ThompsonWater before work. The roving tit flock passed by and caused a distraction, but they were 'just' carrying Chiffchaffs along with them. The highlight was the Mallard ducks displaying - loved it! Haha! π₯°
Busy weekend with Diggers 2nd birthday yesterday, many trips to the patch #ThompsonWater (Common Terns, Silver-washed Fritillaries, Hummingbird Hawkmoth & Purple Hairstreak the highlights). Bike ride, Frisbee at the park, cakes all round & now being looked after at my folks.π+π΄
...my nose is froze, and my ears are froze. And my toes are froze...
but #ThompsonWater was stunning this morning! I'm glad to have a warm house to come back to, though. Birds are tough.
Down to the patch today, much to the delight* of @birdingfox (*probably). It was cold!! But pretty, and felt like something might be about. Alas, nothing unusual (I even went back at lunchtime to double-check) but amazing to see birds surviving these conditions. #ThompsonWater
Not a bad start to the day! I've seen nervous ducks and tightly huddled Coot here before, but not the suspected culprit, until today! My first Otter at #ThompsonWater. π
First trip to #ThompsonWater following a week+ birding Spurn in strong south-westerlies (same as my Oct Spurn holiday). All change at Thompson - no Teal but 40 Shoveler(!) and the Wigeon are back in force. Should be a busy @WeBS_UK count this weekend! (+ 22 Coot).

Five Hobby were distracting, Water Rail calling, 149 Mallard & 61 Teal as duck numbers build, + 41 Coot. #ThompsonWater
Nine Hobby over #ThompsonWater today. Plus Swifts are back and wildfowl numbers well down. And check out all those tadpoles! All change since my last visit over a week ago. π
One for @lonsdalebirding; saw a male Gadwall fly (glide) through my field of view today, it's back tilted my way, one wing up, one wing down, fully lit by the sun, with a backdrop of grey day. Glowing. Oh man! #GadwallAppreciation #ThompsonWater
The patch felt rare today, sadly I never found out why!! House Martins and Swallows back, and a lone Wigeon lingers. #ThompsonWater
Well, that was an exciting @WeBS_UK count for me, the ducks and the Buzzards....not so much for Digger, who didn't care. White-tailed Eagle on the patch!

For anyone invested in the Coot situation at #ThompsonWater, today's @WeBS_UK visit revealed 145 present. A Water Rail showed well near the bird hide (I might have had a momentary lapse of surveying to break up some icy edges for it to feed in...). Tea & adding up (π¬) time now.
Just like me when I was a kid, it was Diggers first @_BTO survey today: @WeBS_UK! He only fell in twice & in true 'first day at school' fashion - in a slightly oversized harness! Lots of Coots and Black-headed Gulls but otherwise quiet at #ThompsonWater #WeBSdog
