All of a sudden, orders were being relayed around the various positions, “Prepare to move.” We were told that 2 Para had reported signs of collapse in the Argentine forces, and we quickly abandoned Mount Longdon and began advancing towards Wireless Ridge.
As I led my fire team out of the boggy low ground up towards Wireless Ridge, I received a radio message, “The enemy is running away, take off your helmets and put your berets on.” I stopped and relayed the order to my men and then put on my crumpled red beret; we continued towards the rocks on top of Wireless Ridge. I saw a rifle stood with its muzzle stuck in the ground marking where the body of a member of 2 Para lay. I noticed a waterproof jacket that had been used to cover his face had been blown to one side and was flapping in the wind; I walked over and replaced it. We now passed through the rocks and descended towards Moody Brook. I could see long lines of maroon berets stretching ahead of me into Port Stanley.
