Resident Doctors, how are you doing at the moment?
A few months into rotations, many new doctors are now adjusting to the demands of on-call and night shifts. If you’re finding yourself replaying situations, wondering if you made the right call, or feeling the weight of the job, remember—it’s completely normal. You’re not alone.
It’s so important to take care of your mental health, connect with colleagues, and seek support when you need it. Join our weekly support group, a confidential space where you can talk openly with peers every Wednesday on Zoom, 12:30-1:30 PM. You’ll find the Eventbrite link in our bio (Instagram) for more information.
Additionally, our partners at Little Blue offer their Little Blue booklets, filled with localised mental health resources designed for medical students and junior doctors.
Take time for yourself—every conversation counts.

Well done @APM_Hub for this fantastic, open-access palliative care medicine resource for new doctors (& anyone else who needs advice about pall care practice).

"If a #nurse says 'Don't you want to...' Yes. You do.
If a nurse says 'Are you sure you want to...' No. You don't."
Amy Fan Conrad, M.D.
Don't be the doc who won't listen to a seasoned nurse!

A lot of #tipsfornewdoctors out there already but mine is to join the BMA.
Join for support with any issues that come up, access to useful resources such as rota checkers and of course for future strike action +/- further ballots

“There is no such thing as a FY1 task. Your training requires you to be built up to more complex and challenging tasks. You shouldn’t be delegated simple stuff every day. Make sure this is supported by your team.”

It's easy to be a good FY1. Be on time. Be organised. Stick to the guidelines and escalate when you can't. Update your patients and their families - they are the ones we do this job for.

#TipsForNewDoctors choose paediatrics!
1. Your time is valuable. If you stay late? Exception report and get paid for it.
2. Your health is something you will never get back. Take your breaks, take 5 to drink water, have a snack.
3. You are a *doctor*. If someone is unnecessarily rude, call it out. #TipsforNewDoctors
#TipsforNewDoctors
1. Be nice and polite but stand your ground. Clarify rejections and rude behaviour- can state “I don’t expect to be spoken to in this way”
2. Work to rule and exception report late stays if you can. New rotations have learning curves but staying late consistently does impact your time, health and money.
3. Read up on cases/topics you encounter. Helps everything stick better
4. Work a little bit on your ARCP portfolio every day to avoid last minute panics
5. Book and take your annual leave - report when you cannot
6. Take some time to plan your career: tasters, publications, audits, teaching. Your future self will thank you
7. Practice practical skills with supervision as needed then independently- cannulas, ABGs, lumbar punctures, etc. High n numbers with good technique makes life easier as you progress
“Don’t be afraid to escalate a patient to the reg/cons. They are there for a reason and would rather know about a deteriorating patient early than when it’s too late. State your plan and ask for advice before they arrive.”

I think the most valuable rotations are ED, ICU and geriatric medicine.
ED to manage what comes through the front door. ICU to understand organ support and who gets it. Geris for an overall holistic approach with emphasis on social care.

“Don’t be afraid to speak up about patients. You will often have more up to date information about patients on ward/board rounds. Your opinion and knowledge count too!”

“Always ask questions. “Can you repeat the dose and duration?”, “what CT and why?”, “can you tell me exactly why we need xyz specialty”, always be clear on the task.”
