Swoon ★★½ (Recommended by @televisiondavid) I appreciate that #TomKalin's directorial debut is considered an integral part of the New Queer Cinema movement, however, I can't say I enjoyed it. It's one of those movies that I'm glad exists, and I realise its importance, but I can't imagine I'll revisit this crime drama for quite a long time. Like I said, I admired a lot about Swoon. The story of the 1924 Leopold and Loeb murder case has been told in cinema before such as Hitchcock's Rope and Richard Fleischer's Compulsion. Kalin recounts the infamous "thrill" killing from a very different angle, focusing more on the homosexual relationship between Leopold and Loeb. It's just that the feature is incredibly low-budget, and it shows. This also doesn't help with the severe dramatic limitations. I must research Kalin's subsequent work, because I'd love to see what he could achieve with a much more substantial budget.

Announcing our third episode! Tomorrow, LINNA & Nic will be discussing Tom Kalin’s “Swoon”. Tune in to a discussion about the 1992 queer retelling of the infamous murder of Bobby Franks & the subsequent trial of Leopold & Loeb. This is queer reclamation at its most controversial!
