#MoveOverDarling (1963) : Doesn’t quite match #CaryGrant and #IreneDunne’s original #MyFavoriteWife (1940), but still remains an entertaining watch. I recall another film with a similar premise but a gender swap—#TooManyHusbands (1940)—which came out the same year as My Favorite Wife and failed to make logical or tonal sense with the concept. Initially, I viewed Move Over Darling as a male-centric remake until Doris Day herself name-dropped Cary and Irene, making the inspiration official. Yes, it’s a remake with minimal changes, but cinema and humor had evolved a lot in those 23 years, giving this version a certain charm. The plot and screenplay remain mostly intact, now enhanced by the transition from black-and-white to color and Cinemascope. Nick Arden marries Bianca, only to be stunned when his supposedly dead wife, Ellen, returns on the very same day after five years. Ellen checks into the hotel where Nick and Bianca are meant to honeymoon. Overwhelmed, Nick must now reveal the truth to Bianca—but is it that easy? Chaos unfolds, and Nick and Ellen begin drifting slightly apart. A twist reveals what happened in those five years, flipping the emotional equation. While Cary and Irene’s pair was iconic, James Garner and Doris Day still manage to bring nostalgic laughter, echoing the past without reinventing the wheel. Polly Bergen adds a spicy flair to her role, and Thelma Ritter—backed by her experience—needs no help at all. Kudos to Michael Gordon’s clean, unfussy direction that avoids unnecessary detours. All in all, a light-hearted, colorful, and fairly enjoyable remake. The entire hotel sequence will make you laugh and the one-liners there are damn funny. #TooManyHusbands (1940) : A woman enjoying a threesome with two husbands—an absurd idea, but quite entertaining, until it ends with a crap finale. The core concept of #Deewana (1992), or the lesser-known Hollywood film that inspired it, was actually very serious. A woman marries the man she loves, and after his death, she falls for and marries another man. Then, her supposedly dead husband returns, creating a moral dilemma. It’s unbelievable to learn that the same serious premise was once used in a screwball comedy back in 1940. Too Many Husbands has that exact plot, but instead of seriousness and emotional depth, the love triangle takes a humorous turn. The woman actually enjoys the chaos of two husbands fighting for her affection—too much attention for any woman she'd be tempted by, I agree. But this doesn’t sit well with the male perspective. It hits their ego, self-respect, and pride all at once. Why couldn’t either of the men be sensible? At least one of them should have stood his ground. As a man, I found that frustrating, but I still laughed at the wife's antics, and I’m sure female viewers will enjoy it even more. Ironically, I’ve liked similar gender-reversed stories in old times, so I shouldn’t complain when the roles are flipped. Yet the real issue here is the conclusion. Despite a concrete court verdict, the wife messes with the man’s feelings, and he still accepts her advances without shame. The first husband also stays quiet in front of the police, as if he had no self-worth. Both men are portrayed so weakly, and then comes a bizarre, unresolved ending involving a threesome—a conclusion that goes against every social, moral, and personal boundary. I wish the screwball tone had stayed within sensible limits like other good films of that era. Unfortunately, this one just goes too far overboard.
