FUN FACT:
Starting in 1979, you could special order your Trans Am in any color & trim combo by having the dealer select the D60: Color and Trim Incompatibility Override option. It overrode the Pontiac engineered pre-determined color/decal combos which also included interior colors. You could literally have a 1 of 1 car. Here are some shown with Pontiac unapproved decal & color combos.

SAD FUN FACT:
1981 was the last year for the 2nd gen Trans Am.
After dropping the 4 speed option for 1980, Pontiac brought it back in 1981. But only behind the Chevrolet 305 engine. At least it came with 3.42 rear gears.
1981 Trans am/Formula engine combos:
*L37 301 150hp, automatic only, with 2.56 gears
*LU8 Turbo 301 200hp, automatic only, with 3.08 gears
*LG4 305 150hp, 4 speed US only, with 3.42 gears

In Canada the LG4 305 was offered with an automatic

A friend bought a new 1981 Recaro NASCAR Edition Turbo Trans Am.
I remember driving it and was totally unimpressed with the 200hp turbo engine and automatic. But the red dash lights, the hood boost lights and interior was kind of cool.

I remember the day in 1979, I pulled into the Pontiac dealership. There were so many Trans Ams parked in the bright sun. Blues, red, maroon, yellow, gold, brown, silver, black & white. They also had a 10th Anniversary on the showroom floor.
These two were the ones I was drawn too. Nocturne blue & Atlantis blue. The Nocturne on the left stood out the most with the same graphics as the Atlantis version. I picked it. Such a cool car for a 18 year old to buy as his first new car. Great memories!

In 1979, when I bought my new Trans Am, IF Pontiac had offered a convertible as a factory option, I would NOT have bought one vs the factory Fisher T-Tops. The aftermarket convertible conversion just doesn't look right to me and the T-Tops were just damn COOL!
