Spotlight on the Treadwheel… This late 17th cent #treadwheel and its small house came from a farm in the village of Catherington, north of #Portsmouth. It was reconstructed at the #Museum in working order and there is a well 12feet deep for demonstration. #wdlm #conservation

Treadwheel from Catherington, Hampshire. Did you know that the original bucket was 300 feet deep? Raising the bucket required at least fifty turns of wheel, meaning the person in the wheel would have to walk more than a third of a mile! #WDLM #Treadwheel #Hampshire

Did you know there is a treadwheel at Maidstone Museum? The 17th Century treadwheel, powered by people, is from Great Culand Farm, Burham, and was used to raise well water. It was moved to the Museum in 1955 and is viewable from Brenchley Gardens today #treadwheel #Engineering
