Some hints:
- Five trees in the same area as this one have scars in 1816 and 1893
- No other trees in this area have a scar in 1803

This #TreeRingTuesday is on one of the most important tools in a tree ring scientist's toolkit: cross-dating. Comparing multiple samples is often the only way to confirm the events of the past, as many samples have anomalies or scars that are not quite clear.

This #TreeRingTuesday we're highlighting another aspect that makes analysis tricky: when are subtle hurt marks associated with fire vs. other damage (e.g. avalanches, wildlife rubbing)? Cross-referencing with samples from other nearby trees is essential.

This #TreeRingTuesday we're highlighting pith dates - the "birth dates" of trees. For species like jack pine that germinate from fire, pith dates can help us confirm #fire dates when compared with the dates of fire scars of other trees from the same area.

This #TreeRingTuesday features a sample from what seems to be a very fire-prone area. Not only did this tree survive 4 fires in its lifetime, but it also germinated as a result of fire. This sample demonstrates how #wildfire is a natural part of a tree's life in boreal Canada.
Apart from reading and dating rings and scars, tree cookie samples can give us more info about the life of a tree. The "swiss cheese" holes throughout this sample are evidence of an ant colony living in the tree.

Our third #TreeRingTuesday shows analysis is not always straightforward.
"Hurt marks" come from things like rock slides, avalanches, and animal activity. They need to be distinguished from fire scars to accurately uncover the history of the tree.

For our second #TreeRingTuesday, here is a sample a bit further south. This tree was a real survivor, experiencing three fires in its lifetime. Multiple fire scars create an interesting shape, including an "ear" shape from the 1944 fire.
