The disciples of John and the pharisees came to Jesus and asked, “Why are we fasting often, and Your disciples do not fast?”
In the time of Jesus, fasting was public and visible. The disciples of John and the Pharisees fasted openly, making it obvious through their appearance (Sad countenance). Even those who opposed each other could unite in fasting because it was outwardly displayed and recognized by all.
However, Jesus introduced a new way. His disciples were not fasting like the others because He was revealing a new understanding of the Kingdom. He taught that fasting should not be done to be seen by people. “When you fast, do not look sad,” He said. Instead, wash your face and anoint your head with oil so that no one can tell you are fasting.
True fasting is not about outward sorrow, ashes, or religious display. It is a hidden devotion before God. When fasting is done in secret and with the right heart, there is a greater reward from the Father, who sees what is done privately and blesses openly.
Fasting without heart change is just hunger.True fasting brings spiritual renewal.Let your fast make a difference in you and others.
