Most importantly Iran populace’s difficult choice between regime change from an increasingly unpopular regime versus overcoming a national humiliation & fight against an existential threat to survival of one of the oldest civilisations- Persian entity. Most important military takeaways are that boots on ground are essential for even the most advanced technological strikes & survivability of these boots and strategic infrastructure can only be ensured by persistent tunnelling & establishment of underground infrastructure. While IDF succeeded in initial phase in DEAD in establishing complete air dominance, US strategic bombers could not obliterate the tunnelled infrastructure which could have been made possible only by boots on ground. In Sino-Indian context, PLA has already structurally overcome the weaknesses observed in IRGC- RAAMD, Space & ISR, airpower etc but also has many times the capabilities of IRGC’s strengths- conventional MRBMs / IRBMs / LACMs, drones & rapid development of tunnelled / underground infrastructure along Indian border with sufficient decoys. With geographical buffers of Qingahi-Tibet plateau &Xinjiang, Indian military urgently needs to relook at its non-contact kinetic & non-kinetic warfare capabilities including RAAMD defences and C-UAS grid along our Northern borders. Many lessons are relevant for India from the 12 days conflict in multiple domains. This monograph has identified critical areas where Indian military, government & defence industry need to work together to obviate our nation’s strategic challenges. 1. With “Strategic Autonomy” as core principle of India’s foreign policy, indigenous military power in domains of space, conventional missiles & drones is absolutely essential for nation’s survivability in the era of intense non-contact kinetic conflicts. 2. C-UAS Grid. IDF claimed 99% interception of >1100 Iranian UAVs; Iran’s daily launch average of about 90 UAVs was insufficient to saturate IDF C-UAS defences. IDF undoubtedly has world’s best RAAMD defences but achieving 99% interception of UAVs is brilliant success rate if true. This is in contrast to other scenarios. Ukraine’s AD interception rates have gradually fallen as Russia’s mass production capacities of Geran 1 & 2 kamikaze drones (upgrade of Iranian Shahed 131 & 136 drones) & Gerbera Decoys has multiplied crossing average launch of 500 UAVs per day. With one more Geran production factory likely soon, Russia may cross daily 800 OWA drones’ mark. In Operation SINDOOR, Pakistan launched 300-500 drones per day out of which many were destroyed & >20 were spoofed. India undoubtedly needs to work hard on C-UAS grid to achieve >95% interception rate while launching >400 indigenous drones per day to penetrate PLA’s dense C-UAS grid. 3. High-Technology Sabotage. Low-cost but high-technology enabled sabotage Operation Spiderweb was executed by Ukraine against expensive strategic bomber assets at > 4000 km. Operation RISING LION raised ingenuity, innovativeness & technology many notches higher to display unprecedented simultaneity & non-linearity to achieve strategic surprise. IDF executed multitude of pre-emptive actions- disruption of IRGC C2, DEAD & neutralisation of key SSM launchers, laying conditions for air dominance. This has set a new normal for HUMINT & SOF to execute a special sabotage for maximising asymmetry either against weak point or the strongest point of the adversary. Both Pakistan’s ISI & PLA’s SOF are capable of replicating such actions on Indian soil with vast PIO network & exploiting easily available Chinese drones’ components. 4. Second Strike Survivability. Most experts emphasise requirements of second-strike nuclear capability but miss out on second strike conventional missiles’ strike capacities. Iran, well aware of Israeli & American intentions, had exactly prepared for this contingency. Despite being subject to large number of surprise strikes on its SSM sites loosing numerous launchers, its underground missile storage sites & more lethal SSMs were safe to launch intense missile barrages for 12 days which even Trump acknowledged. With multi-front threat, India needs to relook at its second strike conventional SSMs launch capacities & capabilities- survivability tunnels / bunkers, strategic reach into mainland China & not Tibet and Xinjiang, assured & accurate multi-domain ISR cover, surge capacities amidst contested logistics, integral RAAMD support particularly interceptor drones, combat dispersal, variety of decoys etc. 5. Elongated Conflicts. 4-day conflict made Pakistan run out of retaliatory options & 12 days conflict made Iran-Israel nearly reach their inflection points. The difference of 8 days was that both Iran and Israel still had indigenous production capacities. During an elongated 3+ years conflict, Russia is more confident of completing planned operation as its indigenous drones & missiles have massively scaled up. Russia has displayed unprecedented rapid prototyping capabilities. PLA’s conventional missiles inventory indicates that China is unlikely to be short on combat sustenance. While IISS Military Balance editions have many errors, it is unbiased & hence the errors will be equally applicable to the 3 countries in consideration- China, India, & Pakistan. SSM launchers ratio of >679 Chinese vs >15 Indian vs >105 Pakistanis evidently highlight that Indian asymmetry against China in conventional missiles is critical in all domains – numbers, variety, indigenous production capacities, protection, satellite-based surveillance support & most importantly spatial reach. While heavy barrages of missiles & interceptors can be extremely expensive for even the richest of nations to sustain, low-cost drones both in strike and interception roles come out as the most suited cost-effective options. Modernisation through 100% indigenisation of RAAMD, drones, missiles & Space thus becomes most essential for India’s survivability at the cost of repetition. 6. Conventional MRBMs to IRBMs / ICBMs. Israel focused on Western Iran. Sejil MRBMs gave flexibility to Iran to exploit strategic depth-Central & Eastern Iran. PLA has transformed from conventional SRBMs to MRBMs DF17 & IRBMs DF26 & inducting DF27. Some new missiles will be on display during PLA’s military parade on 03 September 2025 to celebrate #CPC’s 80th anniversary of victory over Japan. Indian military needs to induct conventional MRBMs & IRBMs. 7. Civilian Casualties and Bomb Shelters. PLA’s 2020 edition of “Science of Military Strategy” lists warning military strikes as last step of its escalation ladder. It will resort to drones-missiles strikes to coerce & compel any adversary nation before starting a war. Even during SINDOOR, Pakistan had tried to target Delhi, while the missile was effectively intercepted at Sirsa. 8. Satellite Support. American PNTRSC capabilities ensured that Israel had 24x7 persistence surveillance of Iranian movements. Iran had assured Chinese Beidou PNT support; With higher remote-sensing capabilities & having imaged conflict area much more, China may or may not have provided Iran the images captured. Troves of American wartime data captured by Chinese satellites will facilitate PLA’s Intelligentisation of space domain to transform from “Sense from Space; Analyse on Ground” to “Sense from Space; Analyse in Space”. India is behind & needs to build indigenous PNTRSC rapidly for fast-paced missiles-drones campaign. 9. AD / EW Mapping & DEAD. Intervals between IDF’s strikes on IRGC’s AD assets in April 2024, October 2024 & June 2025 was used to improve the algorithms of IDF’s standoff weapons. Pakistan, through Turkish & Chinese UAVs & Chinese ELINT satellites, had mapped Indian EW & AD activated during SINDOOR. Chinese software engineers shall be working on the data obtained including preparing for interception of BrahMos cruise missiles. 10. Deception, Decoys and Disused Equipment. Trump’s statement on 20 June 2025 that he will take 2 weeks to decide on American participation in Iran-Israel war may have deceived Iranian strategic leadership more than B2 bombers declared move across Pacific. Iranians effectively employed disused missile launchers. CPC is apt at deception diplomatically & militarily through 36 stratagems taught to every Chinese child. PLA uses multi-domain decoys in great quantum to magnify adversarial surveillance & targeting efforts. Indian military must adapt the art of deploying decoys & disused equipment for both deception & as decoys to increase adversary’s ISR & targeting efforts. 11. Software and Algorithms. 3 pillars of intelligentised or AI-enabled battles are data, computing power & algorithms. #RussiaUkraine war has produced enormous amounts of battle data which is being harnessed by US & Ukraine & Russia & China. AD data obtained by Ukrainians against Russian missiles-drones strikes was used to build better algorithms for American Patriots employed to defend American Al Udeid Base in Qatar. Turkish TB-2 experience against Russians was used by Türkiye to make better AI-enabled TB-2T-AI & TB-3. Software & algorithms are now part of military arsenal. Indian IT expertise needs to be collectively harnessed with Indian military data to achieve Algorithmic Superiority in war and which must be validated in grey zone actions too 12. Penetration of A2AD Bubble. While Indian BrahMos cruise missiles have penetrated Pakistan’s AD grid relying on imported Chinese IADS comprising HQ9 & HQ16 with limited & no ABM capabilities respectively. HQ19 LR-SAMs are claimed to have ABM capability but may not be effective against supersonic cruise missiles like BrahMos & have not been battle tested. PLA is inducting latest AD systems HQ 29 & HQ26 which will have better BMD capability and longer range. 13. Survivability of Missile Platforms. Solid conventional missiles are preferable for Indian military in view of enhanced ISR transparency of PLA. Storage of missiles & hide / standby positions for all conventional missile assets need to be underground or dual-purpose tunnels at all costs. Time spent in missile launch positions must be minimised to ten minutes with multi-domain signature being as minimal as possible. 14. Replenishment & Scoot Times. SSM launchers are very vulnerable during their scoot time to hides. Replenishment takes long time & needs to be undertaken in well-protected bunkers or replenishment pads inside tunnels. Arm-scoot-hide-scoot-shoot-scoot-hide cycle needs to be well planned during adversarial satellite blind periods with adequate C-UAS cover assured during moves. 15. Integration of Missile Deployment with Kill Web. Integration of doctrines, communication systems, combat platforms, organisations and architecture etc is essential to ensure that “Detection Means Destruction”. Chinese military has clearly defined its concept of missile positions & is integrating #PLARF capabilities with Aerospace Force in a kill web 16. Single Launcher Deployments. Single launcher deployments, despite taxing logistics, security & C2 arrangements, are most suitable in the modern era of battlefield transparency 17. Precise Targeting of Nuclear Scientists. Indian nuclear scientists have also been targeted earlier. With Israel’s direct targeting and elimination of 11 Iranian nuclear scientists, India must consider its nuclear, hypersonic, AI & other critical R&D scientists as strategic assets which must be resiliently protected against multi-domain threats.
