Nine years ago an unscrupulous Tory minister (now in the LibDems) filibustered my #TuringBill He pretended my bill - now passed in Scotland - would pardon paedophiles. It was an ancient homophobic trope, conflating gay men with pardophiles. Have a read. https://t.co/rjOiKRdV8F
Nine years ago this week I proposed my Commons #TuringBill It sought to pardon gay men found guilty of crimes no longer on the statute book. Disgracefully a Tory minister (now a LibDem) filibustered the bill. A version of it later passed at Holyrood. https://t.co/iKm5ex1VEg
Nine years ago today I introduced my Commons #TuringBill Its aim: to ‘pardon’ gay men found guilty of ‘crimes’ no longer on the statute book. The Tory Government promised support but then filibustered the bill to kill it off. Have a watch.

For those who idolise Jeremy Corbyn. Anti nuclear but abstained on our Trident vote. An #LGBT ally but wasn’t there - and wouldn’t whip his MPs - for my #TuringBill Hopeless on Brexit. Blamed immigration for driving down wages. None of this is progressive.
8 years ago today I was speaking at Westminster about Putin’s murderous invasions & calling for more conventional defence spending funded by a decommissioning of the UK’s pointless nuclear arsenal.
Labour MPs & leader Jeremy Corbyn abstained in the vote.

As #Trump begins his assault on #LGBT rights we’re reminded how fragile progress is. When I introduced my #TuringBill to ‘pardon’ gay men the Tory Gov promised support but broke that promise. This was my Commons speech. Have a watch & please subscribe! https://t.co/DfY7c4e87d

I introduced my Commons #TuringBill to ‘pardon’ gay men found guilty of historic ‘crimes’ 8 years ago. The UK Government filibustered it having broken a promise to support it. @theSNP @scotgov then passed it at Holyrood. Watch my speech here. https://t.co/3hVdLy0gNG via @YouTube

A wee foot note (for connoisseurs of cynicism in public life). @ScotTories leader Ruth Davidson called my #TuringBill “nationalist grievance” (bizarrely since it was England only & had @michaelgove support.) She then voted for an almost identical bill at Holyrood one year later.
“I apologise for those laws and for the hurt and the harm they caused.”
As First Minister #NicolaSturgeon picked up my #TuringBill which the Tory Government had filibustered at Westminster. @theSNP @scotgov passed it in Scotland. And her eloquent words brought comfort to many.
My speech to the Commons 8 years ago today when I introduced my #TuringBill to ‘pardon’ gay men of ‘crimes’ no longer on the statute book. It was filibustered by a Tory Minister. But @theSNP @scotgov passed a Scotland only version the following year.

#Scotland First Minister, @NicolaSturgeon : Apology to those convicted for same-sex sexual activity that is now legal #TuringBill #LGBT 😊

Having introduced my #TuringBill via that lottery, I’ve experience of Tory duplicity on #LGBT legislation. Turing Bill would have pardoned gay men found guilty of crimes no longer on the statute book. But a Tory minister filibustered the Bill. Interestingly he’s now a LibDem.
NEW: The Lib Dems have tabled a private members bill - via Baroness Burt - to ban conversion therapy.
The Lords will debate the bill in the new year, which would make it an offence.
Quite something that the random lottery of private members bills has got there before the govt.
I knew Dennis Severs. The house he created was - and is - magical. MPs from the Commons Culture Committee @CommonsCMS visited last week and were mesmerised. I’ll always appreciate the support the House gave when I introduced my #TuringBill #LGBT
If you love the magic of open fires at Dennis Severs’ House, please help us repair our chimneys. After three centuries, the soot encrusted brick work is decaying and now we need to raise at least £50,000 to line them.

This is spot on from @MhairiBlack The voting system at Westminster is absurd. A complete, silly, waste of time. Mhairi also describes the way her much needed bill was “talked out”. That happened to my #TuringBill - filibustered by a Tory (now a LibDem) minister. Just to be nasty.
"I've always said that there is a place for tradition. But when tradition gets in the way of functionality, then it's a problem."
In an exclusive interview @MhairiBlack explains why she's chosen to leave Westminster, including the toxic behaviours she witnessed.

I topped the ballot to introduce a private members’ bill. I thought about a host of poverty & equality related measures before deciding on my #TuringBill But this Tory MP thinks Harry & Meghan are the most important issue in the country. Parallel universe. https://t.co/DqpEThbrKv
My Westminster #TuringBill was filibustered 6 yrs ago. Its aim? To pardon gay men convicted of crimes no longer on the statute book. The ever opportunistic Tory leader Ruth Davidson called it “a grievance” bill but voted for it one year later at Holyrood.https://t.co/iKm5ex2ttO
Great exclusive from @benjaminbutter Striking how keen they all are to stress their #LGBT liberal credentials. Few apologies though eg for Clause 28 (Major), homophobic ban on LGBT soldiers (Blair & Brown), filibustering the #TuringBill (May) and err everything (Johnson).
In an unprecedent move, all six UK Prime Ministers today write on their support for LGBT rights, what they regret, who changed their minds and what still needs to be done for #pride50. My exclusive in @theipaper 👇

Thank you Brian. It continues because the Westminster Tory Government - unlike @theSNP Holyrood Government - won’t pass a #TuringBill giving automatic pardon to all men living with historic convictions for “crimes” no longer on the statute book.
@MrJohnNicolson I listened to you yesterday afternoon being interviewed on the radio John (LBC i think)
As per usual, you spoke well, clearly & with precision.
Filibustering is a deplorable tactic in Westminster.
Why is this archaic behaviour still allowed to go on in Westminster?
Twitter can be such an unpleasant place. Occasionally you get lovely DMs out the blue from strangers. Thank you composer Garry in London and LA. #TuringBill

Oh and btw @mark_mclaughlin as a ‘nat’ I don’t “hate” journalists’ questions. I’m always delighted to answer them. In fact was on @LBC earlier talking to @ShelaghFogarty about my #TuringBill
