A $VIX reading of $35 on Day 1 of a move is statistically & practically a completely different phenomenon from a $VIX of $35 on Day 8 of a move.
The #Vega Framework is the quantitative expression of that insight & a structured process for detecting, confirming, and trading the transitions between these market types.
Classification of Types:
Instead of treating the $VIX as a continuous oscillator, it's divided into three clear "zones" derived from a historical persistence of patterns & K-Means clustering analysis pattern recognition:
Low Vol ($VIX<$22): A stable carry vol type marked by strong persistence.
Mid Vol ($VIX @ $22–$32): A transitional or “fragility” zone that tends to be short-lived, as the market either stabilizes or heads toward a breakdown.
High Vol ($VIX>$32): A stress vol type. While the true “crisis cluster” historically begins around $38, use $32 as the practical trading threshold to identify emerging stress early.
The Persistence Decay:
One of the most commonly misunderstood features of volatility is the "mean-reverting behavior". Data shows that volatility does not revert to the mean by default; it reverts early & turns persistent once the initial shock of a move endures.
Looking at vol as it progresses:
Days 1–2: High probability of a RAPID downshift.
Days 3–5: The edge for an immediate “volatility crush” starts to fade away.
Days 6+: Persistence takes over. At this stage the risk of a full shift to a new type of volatility zone rises sharply, making any attempt to fade a move to the other vol zones a low-probability proposition for a winning trade.
The Validation Layer:
Spotting a volatility spike is straightforward. The real challenge is distinguishing an isolated “glitch” from a genuine systemic shift. To resolve this, we require a cross-asset confirmation:
Credit Spreads: Are High-Yield/Investment-Grade spreads widening in lockstep with the $VIX? This remains the single strongest indicator of systemic stress in the market.
Cross-Asset Vol: Are yields (MOVE Index) and other asset classes repricing in unison?
Equity Structure: Is the selling disorderly & showing high correlation across names?
If credit & macro signals fail to confirm the equity volatility spike, the framework keeps the bias tilted toward fading the move.
When credit & macro signals do confirm, the framework switches to a defensive stance that respects the new volatility.
The Path Forward:
The true edge in this business is NOT about guessing tomorrow’s $VIX level. The edge comes from knowing exactly when to fade the "noise", stand aside, or reverse your bias entirely — all based on the vol zone you are ACTUALLY in.
Apply this together with options trading to construct specific asymmetric trades such as $VIX put ladders or broken-wing call flies to engineer trades that can weather the shift in volatility zones & profit from the eventual normalization.
