up: for me, there was a turning point in my life. i read a book that i’ve recommended to a lot of people. it might have been a compilation from various sources or compiled from different materials. the point is, i came across this book at that time, and i feel like the timing was just right.
the book is called limitless by jim kwik. he probably gathered everything from what he studied and wrote this book. there’s one thing from it that i always bring up, no matter how many interviews i do or things i talk about. one of my core beliefs came from this book, my personal takeaway. because everyone will have different takeaways from each book.
what i took away was this: no matter who you are, where you come from, what you’re doing, how old you are, or whether you have any disabilities, if you want to learn something, you can do it. if you have the right process.
which is:
1) the right motivation
2) the right mindset
3) the right method
if you have these three things, then no matter who you are, how old you are, what you’re doing, or what challenges you might have, you can learn anything. and learning here doesn’t have to mean studying in a classroom or learning academics. it could be learning about anything at all in this world. if you set these three things correctly, you can learn it.
so i feel like, if i were to interpret it, when we really take in that message, it keeps reminding us to never stop. never stop trying to grow, never stop learning. because the moment you stop, you won’t be able to catch up.
one thing i’m afraid of is not being able to keep up, not being able to catch up with the world and all the things happening in it.
phuwin: did this book give you the motivation to keep moving forward?
up: it made me feel like i can’t ever stop. it made me feel like the comfort zone is something scary. if i ever feel too comfortable or satisfied with where i am and what i have, i’ll stop searching for answers to the questions i have. that would make me fall behind.
and there’s one thing i’m truly afraid of. i’m afraid of getting alzheimer’s. i’m afraid that, as i get older, i’ll develop alzheimer’s. i don’t want to forget the good moments, i don’t want to forget the good feelings, i don’t want to forget the people i love. one of the things that helps with alzheimer’s is to keep learning. to never stop learning. that’s something i’ve read.
so i feel like this was a turning point in my life that shaped who i am today.

up: for me, "the turning point in my life" could be a good thing or not such a good thing.
phuwin: [talks about his packed schedule] it turns out that, over the past two months, i was out of the house very often. i was hardly ever home, except to come back and sleep. that period was a time when i got to experience so many things, like going out, meeting friends, doing various activities, and meeting even more people. but actually, i’m an introvert. i like being alone.
until recently, my friends even asked me, “hey, what’s wrong with you? you just called me out of nowhere to go out and do things.”
up: is it a process where you're trying to find yourself? because before this, everything was scheduled for you, right? and then one day, when we finally have more time… i really understand this. we feel lost. we wake up and go, “eh? what should i do today?” wake up and, “hey, i’m free today. what should i do?”
i’m just like what you described. i also feel like, do i want to take a break? do i want to have a free day? of course, everyone wants a day off. but when we actually get that day off, we don’t know what to do with it. we don’t know what we want to do.
so i’ll just try to get the things i need to do out of the way first. for example, any necessary tasks, like renewing my id card. so yes, i understand that feeling of being lost. i’ve experienced moments like that too.
there were times when i just worked, worked, worked, and worked nonstop. i don’t even know how long it's been. but when there’s finally a day off, and not just a one- or two-day break, but suddenly only one work day in a whole week, or just one in two or three weeks, it leaves me dazed. like, totally confused.
during the first few days, i don’t know what to do. so i just get my chores done, go get some coffee, sit and read, and think about this and that. i get it, how your brain just keeps running nonstop. but by days five or six, the break starts to feel fulfilling. i start to feel okay with the emptiness. that’s when i begin to look for activities to do.
i start to find things to do, just like you. i begin calling friends, this person, that person, asking if they want to hang out or do something. and that leads to questions like, “do you want to go try this?” or “do you want to try selling this thing?” or “do you want to learn something new?”
and sometimes, if there’s no one to go with, i just go by myself.
i feel like this is the process of finding yourself, of discovering more about yourself. we might already understand ourselves to a certain extent, but if we get the chance to explore further, we might find something we like even more.
like, if you asked me, “what do you like these days?” i’d say, yeah, i like acting. do i like working? i do. but maybe i haven’t had the chance to meet or discover that one thing that hasn’t come into my life yet. and maybe, when i finally do, i’ll really like it too.

↳ the day up conquered chopsticks 🥢
#uppoompat #uptoyouandme
this one is a fun story. i’m someone who knows how to use chopsticks the correct way, according to the proper technique. it’s true that my family is chinese, but even my mom doesn’t use chopsticks properly. when my friends use chopsticks, they tend to hold them stacked on top of each other. my method is to place one chopstick on my middle finger. the one on my middle finger doesn’t move, but the one between my index and thumb is the one that moves.
this all started because of something that happened when i was a kid. i went to a popular suki restaurant with my grandma. back then, they would serve these side dishes, one of which was boiled peanuts. my grandma told me, “up, use the chopsticks to pick up the peanuts. keep trying until you can pick them up, or else i won’t let you eat.”
she might have been kidding, but at the time, i was really stressed out. i was worried i wouldn’t be able to eat, and as a kid, i really loved food! from that day on, i could use chopsticks. i knew how to use them, and my grandma was there teaching me too. so proud. i was so proud of myself. these days, i’m better at using chopsticks than spoons and forks.

↳ how up started reading and fell in love with it
#uppoompat #uptoyouandme
when i was a kid, i loved having my dad read to me. most of the time, it was fiction- novels and the like. i enjoyed sci-fi and supernatural stories. i especially loved when he read to me before bed. it made me so happy. but as i got older, my dad started getting lazy about reading to me. he would read a little, then say, "that's enough for today." but i was always curious about what happened next and wanted to keep reading. so i started reading on my own. that was the starting point for me to read books. i have to thank my dad for that, because the less he read to me, the more i felt like the story was progressing too slowly. a whole month would go by, and only five or six chapters would be covered. so i picked up the book and read it myself because i wanted to know what happened next.
it gradually progressed from buying novels at book fairs to reading harry potter. by the time i picked up the series, it was already on the fifth, sixth, or seventh book. i started reading more books written in english. i’ve always enjoyed novels, but then, one day when i was in sixth or seventh grade, i found myself reading less. novels take up quite a bit of time, right? on top of that, i had to focus on my studies and basketball practice since i also played basketball. so i put the books away and hardly read anymore.

up to you & me ep 01 childhood stories
#uppoompat #uptoyouandme
i was a chubby kid, and i don't really talk about this much. when i was little, i didn’t like brushing my teeth because i wanted the taste of the food i ate to linger until i went to sleep. my mom would tell me to brush my teeth and even bought an hourglass to help me keep track of time so i would brush long enough.
as for my personality when i was a kid, i always felt like i had to be responsible for something. i was good at studying, always at the top of my class, earning stars and awards, and getting to do different activities all the time. it made me feel like, "aren’t i smart?" but this mindset was a trap, and it led to something really traumatizing. it was so traumatic that i feel like it shaped who i am today a lot.
one thing i’ve realized about myself since i was a kid is that i didn’t have much confidence. this is the truth. i’m not very confident in myself. people might see me in different roles, like when i’m at events or on stage, but the reality is, i struggle with confidence. i’ve thought a lot about why i’m this way. no matter what i encounter or what i’m doing, i tend to focus on the details, which makes things slow and takes up a lot of time. and when it comes to practicing, i can get obsessive. i love to practice and often do it excessively, trying to do as much as i can.
so, i sat down and reflected on whether something in my life had caused me to become the way i am. after thinking about it, i remembered a story that i think might be the root cause- the starting point of everything that led to the person i am today.
