Sure. I mostly agree with the criticisms of the old flag. I didn’t hate it but there a few things I didn’t care for. Like numbers and letters of a flag feels tacky to me. Also incorporating the American flag feels a little busy and weird. One of the things I realized once I saw the new flag out and about is how it actually catches your eye and makes you wanna look at it, whereas the old flag was always sorta there but I never cared. As I’ve looked at it up and down the state this past year, I’ve formulated in my mind some meaning and symbolism behind the flag that you just couldn’t conceive with the old one. Now, you’ll have to forgive me if my interpretation diverges from what the designers intended, I’m sure I’ve read it all before, but what follows is my personal feelings toward the elements to the flag. The Beehive: This represents the spirit of the pioneer founders of the state. Obviously very important to me. And its size and central location are a dramatic improvement over the old flag. And gone is the American Eagle hovering over it, which symbolized federal dominance over the people of Utah to me. The Star: Utah’s Star on the American flag. I think this properly represents the relationship the federal government should have to the state. Yes, we are part of the United States, but our rights and our laws (symbolized by the beehive) are in the dominant position above the Star. The Red White and Blue stripes are also a great sign of American patriotism as well. Symbolizing our part in the American tapestry of states. Love the white mountains going into the blue sky, which are the Rocky Mountains obviously. And that little divot into the red are our red rocks and canyons. This really reinforces that this flag represents a real place I recognize. The hexagon means something I haven’t worked out. I think the offical symbolism is the original six counties of the state, iirc—which I like. Overall, I think the new flag does a fantastic job of giving Utahns a reminder of who they are, where they live, and that it’s a real place that’s important. And the fact that it draws your attention is important. Utahns shouldn’t be lost in the background of the rest of America. TLDR: It actually makes me feel something I didn’t know I wasn’t feeling before.
