No doubt: #UmlautWeek is over. But the picture below was taken on its last day, so let’s treat it as a late, but welcome arrival (and ignore the squooshed letters in the bottom line).
Would you like to review all of last week’s umlauts? This way, please: https://t.co/Wxmj5xepa7

This is the final picture of #UmlautWeek. Thanks for reacting to my pictures and for sharing yours! If you ever struggle with writing or designing umlaut marks, remember what this sign with its single-mark umlaut says: Übung macht den Meister. Practice makes perfect. Und tschüss!

Umlaut dots can be tiny and timid (cf. yesterday) – or big and proud, as the ones seen here. The wave-like ‘G’ bar is unexpected in an angular script such as this one (and it is too thin). All in all, the wordmark is quite similar to the toy shop below it: weird and unique.

While denying us a capital eszett, this street name sign – or, rather, name sign pointing to a street – gives us an umlaut style we hadn’t seen before. As it happens, ‘O’ is one of the letters with gaps. And as it happens, the umlaut marks neatly fit in one of them. #UmlautWeek

In the all-caps part of this plaque, there are no ‘umlaut marks’. There is just one umlaut and just one mark. This design is not dictated by any constraints. Guess they did it like this just because they could. Interesting as well: the variable height of the ‘t’ bar. #UmlautWeek

When operating under the constraints of tight vertical space and tight counterspace, you can’t just drop the umlaut marks inside the letter and be done. On this sign, they managed not to exceed caps height and still make ‘Ü’ from ‘U’. Intriguing glyph shapes, too. #UmlautWeek

Speyer 🇩🇪 is famous for its cathedral and the Altpörtel, one of the city’s gates. It should be famous for that umlaut, too. As you can see, the marks can go inside the letter when there is little vertical space. Not unobtrusive, but I can’t say that it doesn’t work. #UmlautWeek

But what happens in all-caps settings when vertical space is tight – or someone decides that nothing goes above cap height? An unobtrusive option is to place the umlaut marks to the left and right of the letter. We’ll take a look at a different approach tomorrow. #UmlautWeek

Let’s talk about umlauts and capitals. An easy – and acceptable – way of placing an umlaut is to center it right above the letter. When small caps are used rather than full caps, there is always enough space for the umlaut – even for a high-flyer like this one. #UmlautWeek

Nuff of the bakeries – this is #UmlautWeek, not #BakeryWeek. The umlaut mark on this sign is similar to the one shown earlier today. It even looks a bit more natural to me – just the way someone would write two connected vertical marks. And why is there a gap in ‘G’? Search me!

One link between yesterday’s second sign and this one is the ‘r’ – a structure that some refer to as a French ‘r’. Another link between both of yesterday’s and today’s sign is quite German: the umlaut, of course – not at all shaped like a double acute in this case. #UmlautWeek

Welcome to this summer’s #UmlautWeek – a tour through (parts of) Germany with typical and atypical umlauts along the way.
The first sign shows an umlaut the way umlauts are meant to be: loud, proud and clear. Looks like a double acute to you? Might as well outside Hungary.

Must be a bakery thing to have umlaut marks that are not in the least ashamed of themselves (and why would they?). The lettering style on this sign is looser than on the sign above. Also, this one shows unexpected connections (such as the one between ‘ä’ and ‘f’). #UmlautWeek

I never really saw the point of Twitter Moments, but I made one. It includes all pictures of this year’s second #UmlautWeek (a hashtag I should have used consistently, but didn’t).

This was September – with two composites of once identical, but now different signs, this year’s second #UmlautWeek, a three-day blackletter streak and a bunch of signs from Alsace 🇫🇷

For no other reason than your pleasure (and mine), I declare this week the second #UmlautWeek of 2018.
We’ll start with this stacked example that is stacked for no other reason than your pleasure. There’s enough room for a conservative placement of the umlaut. But why would you?

This was March – or März, as we say in German, which gave rise to the first #UmlautWeek. I also added a new country (Malta 🇲🇹) and showed not-so-old letters on a really old bookstore. Follow @isoletters for at least 275 more pictures of type and lettering in the public space.

Do you remember that Polish kreska we saw a month ago (https://t.co/ZxhAKQpnUR)? Meet its German brother! Single-mark umlauts are something that native readers of German are familiar with, but this wedge shape feels highly usual (while stylistically appropriate). #UmlautWeek

The ultra-wide letters of ‘Policji’ are eye-catching, but the smaller and narrower line above is no less interesting. What happens to a kreska when there is little vertical space? In this case, the diacritic ends up looking a bit like a nail driven into the base letter.
