They called him a criminal. History calls him a freedom fighter. Chained to a hospital bed. Wounded. Hunted. Yet the British still feared his voice. His name was Dedan Kimathi. In the 1950s, Kenya was under British rule: land stolen, people silenced, resistance punished with death. Kimathi refused to bow. As a Mau Mau leader, he organized farmers, workers, and villagers who held one truth: Kenya belongs to Kenyans—not an empire across the sea. For years he lived in the forests, leading fighters, writing letters, defying colonial power. A bounty was on his head. In 1956, he was captured after being shot in the leg—injured but unbroken. He never begged. He never denied the struggle. In 1957, the British executed Dedan Kimathi. He was 36. They buried him in an unmarked grave, hoping his name would vanish. It didn’t. Kenya rose. Independence came. The “criminal” became a national hero. Dedan Kimathi didn’t live to see freedom— but freedom walks in his footsteps. That is Dedan Kimathi. That is 1957. That is African history. ✊🏾
