Last night at Virginia Tech, I had the honor of rendering the First Salute and presenting the Commandant’s Trophy to two @VTCorpsofCadets who were top candidates at OCS this summer. These cadets represent the next generation of leaders who will serve the Nation and lead Marines.

Born September 30, 1931, on a farm outside Herndon, Virginia: Wesley Lee Fox. Oldest of ten kids. He quit school after the eighth grade because he planned to be a farmer.
Then Korea started. He enlisted in August 1950, a few days before turning 19, planning to do four years and go back to the farm.
He stayed 43 years.
He was wounded in Korea in 1951 and went back for a second tour anyway. After that he was a drill instructor, a recruiter, and a Force Recon platoon sergeant. Sixteen years after he enlisted, the Corps commissioned him as an officer.
On February 22, 1969, First Lieutenant Fox was commanding Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, during Operation Dewey Canyon in the northern A Shau Valley.
His company ran into a large, well-hidden North Vietnamese force. An enemy blast wounded Fox and every member of his command group except his executive officer. Fox kept going anyway. He knocked out an enemy position himself, ordered the assault, and moved through the fire calling in air strikes.
Then his XO was mortally wounded, and Fox was the only officer left. He reorganized the company and led it forward with grenades until the enemy broke.
He was hit again in the final assault. He refused medical attention, set up the defense, and personally made sure his wounded got out. His Marines took the entire bunker complex.
Nixon gave him the Medal of Honor in 1971.
He didn't retire until 1993, when he hit the mandatory age of 62, which made him one of the very few Korean War veterans still in uniform during the Gulf War. Then he spent eight more years in uniform training cadets at Virginia Tech.
From eighth-grade dropout to colonel. Happy birthday, Colonel.

Never Forget. Never Forgive.
Never forget Richard “Ricky” Middleton Blood Jr
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Ricky was on the 105th floor of the South Tower, working as an insurance executive for Aon Corporation
He was 38 years young
He was a son, a husband, a father of two young children, a big brother, a Virginia Tech engineer, and a volunteer fire marshal for his company. When the North Tower was struck, he did not wait. He told people to get out
Survivors later said his urgency saved their lives. He could have kept going down. Instead, he turned back toward the 78th-floor sky lobby to help others find a way out
That is the last place he was seen
His name is on Panel S-62 at the National September 11 Memorial. His body was never recovered. What remains is the testimony of the people who lived because he stayed
Ricky Blood was not only a victim of that day. He was a man who used his last minutes for other people
That is a kind of courage that does not fade with the years
We remember Ricky
We remember his family
We remember that love, duty, and decency still showed up in a burning stairwell
Rest in peace, Ricky ✝️

Been 22 yrs since 1st Lt Timothy Price was killed while serving our country in Iraq. Timmy was a Hokie and member of the @VTCorpsofCadets. Since construction is going on at the Pylons this year, I’m unable to lay a wreath by the one inscribed w/his name. So, I’m posting here instead w/ the hope that people will continue to remember our friend.

Congratulations to our Virginia Tech Cadets and Naval ROTC Midshipmen who graduated from Marine Corps Officer Candidates School (OCS) in Quantico, Virginia, last week.
Completing OCS is no small accomplishment. It demands physical toughness, mental resilience, sound judgment, and unwavering determination under pressure. These young leaders have taken another significant step toward earning the privilege of leading Marines.
We are incredibly proud of your performance and the professionalism you displayed throughout this challenging training. Your success reflects the dedication you have invested over the past several years and the outstanding mentorship provided by our Cadet staff, Naval ROTC staff and Marine Officer Instructors.
Congratulations on reaching this milestone. We look forward to welcoming you back to campus as you continue your development and prepare for the next phase of your journey toward becoming Marine officers.
Prepared to Lead. Trusted to Serve.
