🌀The memory of Vardah never fades away from me. I remember watching a huge tree fell on electric posts and the wind was gushing through from one room to another with rain water entered through the window and wetted completely. #Vardah

@MasRainman #Vardah had a much more defined eyewall than you'd expect from a storm of her strength. Wind speed alone is not everything, and sometimes you have to take into consideration a #cyclone's raw appearance as well. Was a terrible storm for #Chennai. https://t.co/8wb3OCCR7T

#OTD in 2016, #Cyclone #Vardah was at a 100 mph (155 km/h) peak intensity, and imminently closing in on #TamilNadu, #India. Frosted with a thick, cold layer of convective icing, Vardah made landfall near the city of #Chennai on the afternoon of #December 12th, leaving her crumbs of destruction over an extensive region of Eastern India. Even with the evacuation of over 12 million residents from vulnerable, low-lying areas in advance of the storm, Vardah still took the lives of 38 people, and stands as one of the costliest Indian Ocean Cyclones in the 21st century. After her crunchy, #Christmas cookie banding features had been chewed on during her first landfall, Vardah would eventually go on to cause flooding in #Somalia as a dissipating system.

Why were alert not taken seriously for this #CycloneMichaung than in #Vardah Cyclone in 2016 and Nivar on 2020,Mandous on 2022 IMD path said it will cross between Nellore to Machilipatinam (changed from Chennai as one of the possible landfall boundary) and we have a habit of not taking AP cyclones as it won't impact us! They never projected stalling Scenario (as forecast models projected it )might create more impact in terms of rains.

I hv seen #ChennaiFloods in 2015, #Vardah cyclone and now seeing in 2023 Yes, we are learning but not fast enough Our #Chennai is not hospitable in 2040❌ It's a fact. From clearing encroachments to drainage to forecasting to desilting, everything need an overhaul within yrs🤦‍♂️
