Vascular surgeons use to be able to do this because they had no other choice:

A lot of people can put in a stent graft, unfortunately only a few can take them out. https://t.co/GlwVYgUr33 via @docpark #vascsurg #vasctwitter
I don't know why people claim agenesis of IVC when they can pass a wire up to the right heart from below and place a 22mm stent in it. It's likely a flattened, chronically scarred IVC. #vasctwitter #vascsurg
One more #EJVESForum case report about percutaneous retrieval of foreign bodies👏 have a look at the RAPID-HANDLE technique from 🇯🇵
#VascTwitter #MedTwitter #MedEd
🇯🇵 🎯 QUERY: Struggling with Pulmonary Artery Catheter Retrieval? 💥
When standard snares lack the grip: A reliable solution for intravascular foreign body removal.
This Technical Note in #EJVESForum details the ‘RAPID-HANDLE’ technique for the safe and efficient retrieval of embolised catheters.
💡KEY FINDINGS:
· The Challenge: A fractured 10 cm infusion port catheter fragment embolised into the main pulmonary artery, requiring percutaneous retrieval.
· The Innovation: The RAPID-HANDLE technique. It utilises a homemade snare with an adjustable loop combined with a large-diameter introducer sheath (14 F) featuring an adjustable haemostatic valve.
· The Mechanism: The homemade snare allows for precise diameter adjustment to grasp the "side-on" fragment, while the adjustable valve on the sheath prevents blood loss and facilitates the secure withdrawal of the folded catheter.
· Outcome: Successful, bloodless retrieval was achieved without fragment loss or vessel injury.
🚀 TAKEAWAY:
Precision control in percutaneous retrieval of foreign bodies often fails due to poor loop stability or sheath resistance. The RAPID-HANDLE technique offers a cost-effective, adjustable alternative to commercial snares, ensuring that even long, straddling fragments can be retrieved safely from the pulmonary circulation.
