Friends at A Coy ReMSO, 6 Scots, are spearheading a new memorial to Lt. Col. Blair Paddy Mayne, DSO and three bars, Legion d'Honneur, Croix de Guerre, 1915-1955. It is to commemorate Mayne and the men of No. 11 Commando, and for those who went on to join the SAS. Mayne was a soldier, an athlete, a scholar and a legend. Most of all he was a revered leader of men. Having trained and fought with No. 11 Commando, he went on to be a founder member of the SAS, and to command 1 SAS for much of the war, after SAS founder David Stirling's capture by the enemy. This memorial is designed to celebrate Mayne - and the Commandos and SAS's - links to Galashiels, wherein they recruited and commenced their punishing route marches to the Isle of Arran, during early Commando training.
