Known as the Valley of the Planets, this geological wonder feels like a portal to another world, what secrets do these ancient rocks hold? Formation Story The Valley of the Planets, locally called Wan Tikofi or Kawakeb, emerged over millions of years in Libya’s southwestern desert near Ghat. These enormous spherical and disc-shaped rocks, some up to 10 meters in diameter, were sculpted by relentless natural forces. Formed within sedimentary layers these concretions likely originated as mineral-rich water seeped through rock, precipitating around a central point. Over time, differential erosion stripped away softer surrounding material, exposing the resistant, rounded formations that now dot the barren valley. The Tuareg, nomadic inhabitants since the 4th century AD, named these rocks for their celestial resemblance, weaving them into their star-guided navigation and oral traditions. Geological Information Located in the Kufra region, the Valley of the Planets spans roughly 30 kilometers in a stark, waterless landscape. The formations often referred to as trovants, are primarily concretions, hardened mineral masses formed by the precipitation of minerals like calcite or silica within sedimentary rock. Their spherical shapes result from spheroidal weathering, where minerals accrete outward from a nucleus, and erosion smooths irregularities over millennia The valley’s geology is tied to the Libyan Desert’s ancient sedimentary basins, underlain by Precambrian basement rocks like schist and granite. These basins formed during Paleozoic subsidence, experienced minimal tectonic disruption, preserving the concretions. Some rocks exhibit concentric rings, resembling tree growth rings, hinting at episodic mineral deposition. While similar formations exist in Romania, the Libyan trovants are unique for their scale and desert setting. Their apparent “movement” or “growth” is likely due to environmental factors like moisture-induced expansion or wind-driven erosion, though some claims of biological-like behavior remain scientifically unverified. 🔁 Valley of the Planets: Libya’s Cosmic Desert Enigma

▶️ In Libya’s remote Tadrart Acacus desert lies a surreal landscape where massive, planet-like boulders defy explanation.

Known as the Valley of the Planets, this geological wonder feels like a portal to another world, what secrets do these ancient rocks hold?

Formation Story
The Valley of the Planets, locally called Wan Tikofi or Kawakeb, emerged over millions of years in Libya’s southwestern desert near Ghat.

These enormous spherical
and disc-shaped rocks, some up to 10 meters in diameter, were sculpted by relentless natural forces.

Formed within sedimentary layers
these concretions likely originated as mineral-rich water seeped through rock, precipitating around a central point.

Over time, differential erosion
stripped away softer surrounding material, exposing the resistant, rounded formations that now dot the barren valley.

The Tuareg, nomadic inhabitants
since the 4th century AD, named these rocks for their celestial resemblance, weaving them into their star-guided navigation and oral traditions.

Geological Information
Located in the Kufra region, the Valley of the Planets spans roughly 30 kilometers in a stark, waterless landscape.

The formations
often referred to as trovants, are primarily concretions, hardened mineral masses formed by the precipitation of minerals like calcite or silica within sedimentary rock.

Their spherical shapes
result from spheroidal weathering, where minerals accrete outward from a nucleus, and erosion smooths irregularities over millennia

The valley’s geology
is tied to the Libyan Desert’s ancient sedimentary basins, underlain by Precambrian basement rocks like schist and granite.

These basins
formed during Paleozoic subsidence, experienced minimal tectonic disruption, preserving the concretions.

Some rocks exhibit
concentric rings, resembling tree growth rings, hinting at episodic mineral deposition.

While similar formations
exist in Romania, the Libyan trovants are unique for their scale and desert setting.

Their apparent
“movement” or “growth” is likely due to environmental factors like moisture-induced expansion or wind-driven erosion, though some claims of biological-like behavior remain scientifically unverified.

The valley’s isolation
1,130 km south of Tripoli, enhances its untouched, alien allure.

▶️ Interesting Fact
The Valley of the Planets was named by NASA due to its striking resemblance to celestial bodies, a testament to its otherworldly appearance.

Despite their inorganic nature
local folklore and some sources suggest these “living stones” may grow or move, a phenomenon that continues to puzzle geologists and inspire myths.
