We today hosted the @gatesfoundation team alongside @JHUCBID's Dr Soumyadipta Acharya and Prof. @waiswap both team leads for the #VectorCam Project, an artificial intelligence model locally embedded in an Android smartphone application for mosquito identification.
The study enrolled 240 households across two districts, with 120 houses in each district. Blind randomization was conducted, assigning 60 households to the control arm (routine surveillance) and another 60 households to the study arm #VectorCam.
The pilot study in Adjumani and Mayuge aims to overcome expertise and cost barriers in scaling up vector surveillance programs by determining the effectiveness, programmatic feasibility, and overall acceptability of the #VectorCam tool through a randomized control trial.
Using computer vision algorithms, #VectorCam morphologically identifies mosquito vectors by species, sex, and abdominal status, allowing for decentralized identification by Village Health Teams #VHTs.
