Recently, a TC #volunpeer alerted us to the story of Josephine Cropper, an African American woman who left her Philadelphia home in 1867 to teach for the Freedmen's Bureau. According to scattered Bureau documents, she was assisted by NC politician and activist, James H. Harris.
